86' xj700 not charging. Has brand new battery. Tested reg/rec in forward and reverse bias both +/- and all good. Did resistance test between all 3 windings and all at .4/.5. As well as each winding to ground with all 3 O.L. anyone know what else I could check/test? I'm stumped. Connections seem to be good as well. TIA

To be honest I don't know too much about older brushed type. Like carbon buildup?

Not so much carbon buildup but the brushes need to touch the rotor and the rotor rings should be clean. If they are not touching your charging system cannot work. The brushes have wear limits but they can also lose conductivity I read if they are old. Do you have a Haynes manual for your bike?

I agree that it is probably your brushes. Had a problem with mine. So bad, that at idle, hitting the brake would some time cause it to shut off. Order from Chacal. Not a difficult job. Be sure to get a gasket since yours will be toast when you remove it.

What do the brushes look like with regards to the wear limit marks? You should change them anyway mabe the original ones if it's a very low mileage machine.

They look fine to me. However, were saturated with oil since I had a slight oil leak from the shaft seal.

My 700's charging system was kind of struggling. I ended up cleaning the brushes and rotor and installing the correct battery. That seemed to fix it.

You can clean the slip rings with crocus cloth not sure which grade though. As fine as you can get.
