I have this ongoing problem with the carbs well i thought so but i am leaning towards ignition problem... but i have something else ... yesterday pressing starter the red oil light just came on, then went back later and it was ok...today it started ok .. rode and stopped had to get push start...thinking it was the neutral switch i checked wire followed it back .. grounded it still no go ..checked starter button it was ok and on of switch.. got to be something simple.... i did notice on my ride yesterday braking for lights the rpm dropped to zero and stalled but it did re start.... did this a few times....so today i have this problem grounds are clean... 1891 xj650 this model has no side stand switch just the clutch lever switch... turning engine kill switch off red oil light stays off, any gear red light comes on pushing start button... ignition fuse ok flashers work/rear light but not headlight..no power to starter solenoid.
Update if i ground the black and yellow wire on the engine cut off relay it clicks the starter works

Is your charging system working properly? Put a multimeter set to 20v DC across the battery terminals with the engine running. Rev past 2000 rpm if you can that is when alternator it kicks in, should have about 14 plus volts I think.

A pain to pull that switch... decided to drain the oil some sludge on the drain plug... (clutch) the new oil has just done 300 miles...put two quarts of gas in engine, worked the gear lever ..drained ad put it back in again .. the switch came back to life, then went off..... left gas in for half hour..... drained ... switch came back to life..... so hope its fixed
