So I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this, but before I do it I want to confirm-

The dots on both cam shafts need to align with the arrows, yes? This needs to be redone?

My chain is connected in one piece, so when I rolled the exhaust shaft in place it rotated the intake one a few degrees.

    Thanks

Yes you are correct about the marks.

@Franz thanks. Rip. Those alignment dowels don't go in and out the easiest, but I'll make it work. I didn't even notice the rotation until I'd rolled the exhaust cam into place and put the dowels back in. I got excited and got ahead of myself instead of looking twice.

I'll be back to it after our daughter goes to bed I guess. Thanks for confirming my suspicion.

I always do the exhaust cam first make sure the bottom of the guide is in it's pocket in the crankcase. Chain tight from crank to exhaust cam then tight to inlet cam, then fit tensioner and check alignment. Turn engine over twice to make sure timing marks are lining up. If the chain is not tight the cams can move because of valve spring pressure.

Exhaust timing is very near a single tooth move may throw it out too much. Inlet looks at least one tooth out, cam needs rotated clockwise at least one link.

2 hours later... And I'm pretty happy with this. They're not torqued at all, just tightened enough to close gaps.

I'm calling it for tonight because I've gotta finish getting the old gasket off the case for the tensioner before I can put that on anyways, and I don't feel like laying on the floor anymore. Plus it's almost midnight and I need to shower before bed to get this grease and oil off. Made less progress than I hoped for tonight, but I'm happy with what I've gotten done.

Maybe tomorrow I get that cover on, we'll see.

Note- the timing plate line is good too. I didn't take pic of that, but it looked like the images in Haynes manual, and was in TDC. I tried to edit the last comment but with the storm hitting right now, service is bad and it is letting me add new posts easier than editing existing one

Looks good if your chain is tight.

Any tricks to getting the gasket to stay in the cover? Been trying to get it on and it falls out before I get it on, and then it's proving near impossible to get lined up if I put it on the head instead.

Can I use a dab of grease to keep it in or something?

Additionally, torque spec for the yics plug bolts? I have checked Haynes and an online guide and must be looking right over it. I'm guessing with how common it is, 7#, but I want to make sure they stay in place.

The torque setting for the plug should be in the routine maintenance and servicing chapter of your Haynes manual l got 22Nm.

I used a little black timing cover silicone in the recess on the cam cover to hold the gasket in place or you can use the red tack stuff in the valve adjustment thread.

Once everything is fitted do a quick valve clearance check before fitting the cover. You need those in spec before any carburettor balancing work

Good to know. I ordered feeler gauge set to check that before closing it up, should be delivered tomorrow. I held off on ordering brake pads from Chacal yet in case I need to get shims or anything else to adjust those valve clearances.

By black timing cover silicone, you mean RTV?

You may be able to swap some of your shims if necessary between valves.

Glad I checked. They're all out. Just added one of the tools to remove them to my order with Chacal, so I'll get these old ones out next week hopefully and be able to order replacements.

Out of spec but not out of engine. Rotating the camshafts with shims out can cause damage. My mistake you have ordered the bucket hold down tool.

Recheck #4 intake. It is less likely to be out of spec large, so you want to be sure.
