I'm not sure what the issue is or where to even begin, I purchased this bike about 2 months ago never a problem , even drove it home 80 miles after purchasing.

I took it to a local shop for a oil change, since then while riding it will literally just die...any suggestions where to start would be amazing. Like I said the bike was purchased used. And the wiring under the seat is well kind of a mess....black tape everywhere.....

Suddenly cutting out is it. Check all the wiring harness connectors and the fuse box. The latter if it is the original Yamaha one with the glass tube fuses need changed to a blade type fuse box. Is your right handlebar switch screws tight. It earth's to the handlebar so you need a good connection there.

I am wondering if they disturbed something when doing the oil change. Probably just coincidence no way of knowing for sure.

That's a tough one. When it dies out, does it always die completely? Easy to restart afterwards? Happen after bumps or seemingly at random?

I'd guess anything from bad relay, short to ground, bad ground, bad fusebox connections, ???

I feel the oil change is probably a coincidence, but is the level correct in the sight glass?

Yes l think there is a diode. If the oil level is low the current to the starter motor is cut off to protect the engine.

Were you riding the bike during heavy rain?

Check the oil level through the window on the clutch cover in case it is too low.

I'm going to dive in here after awhile , I appreciate all the help and starting point from all of you. I will keep posted what I figure out. I'd imagine it still has the old glass tubes , if it does is there a website that you guys suggest for a upgrade ?

Check all the places where the wiring harness is on the frame passes through frame openings, headstock for example you are looking for damaged insulation.

Chacal aka Len our site vendor has the fuseboxes. Contact him on info@xj4ever.com if you want.

XJ700X should not have fuses under the seat, right? It has blade fuses under the indicator lights cover.

The only thing the oil level indicator will shut down is your heart when you remember you forgot to fill the crankcase :)

Other than that, it does verify the starter switch, oil indicator bulb, wiring, and that you have 12V Signal power. On the early XJ's it was more beneficial as it was powered off the Ignition fuse, which if your bike is not starting is a nice verification of at least having Ignition power

So replaced a few corroded ends and tightened up the wires the best I could, took it for a ride seemed to be doing fine and about 3 miles down the road died. once it did that I can while coasting get it back to neutral and start it again..could this be a sediment in the gas tank and carb issue ? Because once it died , it was more often after that ? Should I try draining the gas tank, and giving the carbs the old hey how you doing ?

Is the ignition stopping working as if you hit the kill switch or is the bike spluttering to a stop? Have you got an inline fuel filter on the bike?

Stopping like you hit the killswitch it must be an electrical problem. That is not fuel starvation. Start the bike let it idle and move all of the wires about that you can, under the seat where all the black taped wires are, round the headstock, turn the bars left to right a few times check at the TCI. Move the wiring from the ignition switch and the handlebar switches. Check the fuses move the wires at them if you can. Something is making and breaking the circuit, and killing the ignition should not be difficult to fix, it is finding it is the problem. What about the connectors inside the headlight bucket, open connector blocks one at a time and check for damage, melted connectors, damaged wiring. Spray them with WD40. Check the main harness where it leaves the frame to the headstock.

The black wire with the white stripe that goes to the TCI and grounds the ignition system. Can the sidestand safety system on the Yamaha XJ 700X cause an intermittent total loss of ignition on this machine? Faulty relay?

So I took your word for it turned it back on started wiggling wires and if I push beside the ignition on the wires it cuts off....tomorrow I'm going to look as how to get back to them wires and see what I can figure out !!!

Buying the bike used of course there have been many do it yourselves to it and we'll they just weren't up to par the ignition being one of them I have half a mind to buy a new one because the key now won't even come out and they have put a safety mechanism on it where you have to have this piece that clips on and you can take on and off that acts like the key.

Would the website someone shared before have ignitions available?

Okay.....new dilemma getting a new ignition soon from chacal, thanks for putting me in contact with him I appriciate it all.

So taking the old one out and I see exactly why it was cutting on and off where this piece screws in both sides were infact broken only holding it in with well.... electrical tape and some shoe string

So basically what I'm asking help with is how do I get to the underside to take the two bolts off is it the center bolt and the two on the sides to help release the handle bars ? Or is it more then that....

Yes but the space provided I don't see how I'd get a socket on them. I'll post pictures later to show what I mean

I got the ignition key mount bolts on my machine out with a long extension and and Allen key socket. Think I had to use a flexible joint on it. Post the pictures when you can. It might be more difficult to get them out on the 700X than my 900f.
