The former problem was that the right side flashed ok, front and rear, but on the left only the rear lit and was steady, not flashing. I disassembled the left front bulb assembly, cleaned all the connections put in a new 2 filament bulb and tested all the wires for continuity, everything was testing identically to the right assembly.
All the wires in the bucket were connected the same for both sides. Left hot to dark brown, right hot to dark green. solid black to the same black connector as right side black and the black/white wire to the same black connector as the right black/
white was connected to. then I disassembled the signal switch on the bar, cleaned the contacts and tested. All ok. turned the key and the right side still flashed ok but now on the left both the front and rear lit steady, not flashing. any suggestions for what to test next ? I switched out the flasher relay with spares I had with same results. I've got a bunch of jumper wires. Any tests
to jump from front to back ?

If you still have the stock signal housings, then the signals use single-filament bulbs. The only stock bikes that use dual-filament bulbs are the XJ700 and XJ1100 models, and those models only use dual-filament bulbs in the FRONT signals......rear signals, on all XJ-series bikes, are always single-filament.

so are there single filament bulb sockets that fit into the housings ? And how do the flashers work ok on the right side ? and not the left ? The harness I
got from eBay was great in all other respects. I laid it out on cardboard and checked all the circuits before mounting it on the frame. I also got the housings from ebay. Yeah, the manual shows only two wires coming off of the bulb sockets in the front. But that would give me an extra two black side ground c.f.final in the bucket

Aren't the rear signal lights dual filament that are always on with the tail light and also blink? I haven't checked mine yet but that seems logical.

The rear flasher bulbs on this mix of parts I used were single filament, but parts off of eBay are often not what they claim to be
Cancel is the best authority of what is genuine stock

No....the center tail/brake lights are dual-filaments, but the flashers are always single filament on the rear (and that's the law in all states). Front signals are allowed to be dual-filament (in other words, both "running lights" and flashers), but most models didn't adapt that practice until the mid-80's and later,

Just went for a nice ride and can confirm running lights at the front of mine.

Did you ever figure out what the problem was? My 81 650 Maxim just started doing the same thing. Right side blinks fine, left rear lights solid, left front does not light at all.
