Xj550 not charging

    I'm having an issue with my 81 xj550. My mechanic says the bikes not charging but everything is testing fine. It's not charging the battery. Anything we should try or should replace? He's going to clean the brushes and check for any breaks in the wiring tomorrow.

    First thing common denominator is the battery old , or fully charged ? With bike running put a voltmeter on the positive terminal see what it reads at idle and rev it to around 2000 rpm and check should be 13 volts or so .

    Battery is only about a year old and charged.

    Do you have battery voltage getting to the alternator brushes?

    The 550 has a built in voltmeter when running it should sit around 14V
