I have a 1982 Seca XJ750. Every time I accelerate it makes a squealing noise. But as soon as I let off the throttle it stops. It also doesn't make the sound while in neutral nor if I am revving the engine. It only makes it when I am accelerating. The best way I can describe the sound is a squealing that becomes higher pitched when the engine revs higher. When I switch gears the squealing gets lower and quieter again, until the rpm's get high again.

    Any help would be great.

    Thanks
    -Nick

Does this mean that it only makes this noise when you are in gear and in motion?

Are you sure its coming from the Engine and not the Front end?

Ya it only makes the noise when in gear and in motion. I think it is coming from the engine but I'm not positive. I cant really pinpoint the sound. I assumed the engine area because it only makes the noise when in gear and in motion.

Put the bike on the center stand and spin the tirers listen for any noise and look for play from side to side. Your looking for or lisening for bearing noise. I dont see why the motor would make noise only when you give it gass Id start with the rear wheel because the stress of pulling away may be the problem .

His noise is RPM dependent. It's further up the drive line.

Clutch sounds likely but I don't know how you'd make a wet clutch squeal.

I'll put my dollar on an exhaust leak.

It hasn't had any clutch work recently.

I had considered that it might be an exhaust leak because the noise does have a slight windy sound to it. But after riding the bike for a half hour the noise gets a little quieter.

I was thinking that it might have something to do with the transmission because as soon as I disengage the clutch the noise stops. Could this be it?

    You need an assistant.
Somebody is going to have to run the bike in gear on the work stand while you Probe the Engine with a Wooden Dowel or something and pinpoint where this noise is being generated from.

Just from the limited information available in the Thread, so far, I don't have enough information to even hazard a guess.

Something rotational is all I have, so far.
That could be a lot of different things!

Does the noise happen in all gears? Or is there one that is quiet?

It makes the noise in all gears. It does seam to get quieter in higher gears but it might be because I going faster and the wind is blowing.

RickCoMatic - I had the same idea. When I get time I am going to do this.

My XS11 started making a similsr noise after I changed the exhaust and put in a K&N filter. it is kind of like a turbo or blower whine. It gets louder as the engine runs faster , I like it. There is nothing mechanically wrong with the motor or drive line. I am thinking it may be air whistling in the air filter box. It's been 10K miles since then and still running strong.

We can hope that its something like that ... but, the rotational aspect of it is alarming.

    5-Speed.

More like a 4-Speed with and Overdrive though. You really don't get all that much more speed once in 5th. It just knocks the Tach down a couple-hundred rpm's.

is the squeal more like a whine? could be the constant mesh gear whine... mine does it.. changes with RPM's, only in gear and under load, etc...

One hundred forty five miles per hour, on a two decade old, five hundred fifty cubic centimeter, normally aspirated, inline four cycinder, double overhead camshaft engine ... on Texas roads, known to be about as flat as a Bowling Alley ...

And nobody's calling it ... like your sitting there playing Draw Poker and just told those at the table: "I'm pat. I'll play these."

    I'm impressed!
But, one hundred four point five wouldn't have got a rise out of me.

145 MPH would have won you the Pole for the Phoenix 400!!!

haha. good ol' west texas winds. I was going north on 207 with a 15mph steady wind at my back and i caught a good draft off the rider in front of me. if you ever get a chance you should ride that road, not much to look at but its about 30miles straight and flat; some curves and then another 30miles straight. hit ralls north on 207 and straight up the panhandle. my buddy and i were crusing around 100-115. Its because of that ride that he wants to trade in his 2003 105th Fat Boy for a Ducati, so he can be faster than me, great stuff. Next time i do it ill get video. I love my seca

My '82 does the same thing... similar high pitched whine noise under acceleration. I've only had the bike since late last summer and don't know what it is "supposed" to sound like - I assumed transmission gears. It does seem rotational, but it is not a grinding or destructive sound.

    Middle Gear whine.
    Get used to it.
It lets the world know you are riding a Yamaha.
