Any good "how to" posts on tearing down the rear end? 82 XJ750J, although they seem to be similar across models. The Haynes manual just says, effectively "its complicated, take it to the Yammy dealer".

This is from a parts bike and I really just need to thoroughly clean it up (the inevitable grit from polishing). I don't have any reason to suspect bearings need replaced. Oil was relatively clean and everything is smooth. Wouldn't mind changing seals as long as I'm in this deep, which would require extracting at least one ring gear needle bearing. If I can degrease and clean it while leaving the pinion bearings alone I'll probably do that. However, I don't see any crush sleeves on the parts diagram, so I might be safe pulling the pinion without running into unobtanium parts??

Not sure if pinion bearing preload is set via torque or runout or if the nut just runs up hard against the race? Or since its not a tapered bearing pair, maybe its not preloaded? Never been into this style before.

Question why did you tear it down ? A differential should last forever. I'm not sure if you will get a rebuild Info in the manual .

    Good question I suppose!

    1) I want to clean it thoroughly, inside and out.

    2) I enjoy the wrenching as much as riding

    3) And maybe most importantly, as George Costanza said..."Because its there!!"

Thank you. David's post and the link to the Venture rebuild is exactly what I needed.
