I pulled the final drive off my 82 XJ650 and the drive shaft came with. It should be easier to reinstall if the drive shaft were separated from the final drive but it didn't seem to want to budge after a couple tugs. Do I just need to tug harder or does it need to go in as one piece?

No the shaft should pull out of that coupler fairly easily, I’ve never had one stick in the final. Give it a good tug and then clean up and degrease. Post up some pics if you are unsure of the condition.

Muchas gracias, amigo! Had to hold the driveshaft in a vice and tug pretty hard but they are now divorced. Splines look good so far as I can tell.

Be sure to put new high-molybdenum content grease on the splines before reinstalling.
