I know it's been a while since I have been on the site, but I have a dilemma. My back brake was sticking a lot and I got a hair up my rear and took my back tire off. And to my surprise i had a broken brake. clean and smooth. But my question is can a virago brake work on my 650. They are a hell of a lot cheaper and easier to come by. Maybe someone else has done this.

I did some checking and found out that the brake shoe part #19-1694
in the dennis kirk catalog for the 80-83 Maxim 650 also fits:

    XV500 Virago 83
    XS500 75
    XJ550 Maxim 81-83
    XV750 Virago 81-83

The Rear Brake shoes are the same on a number of Models.

You can do some preventative maintenance back there. Push-out the Cam activating rod and shine it up with some finishing paper to get it free of oxidation. Roll-up some sandpaper and twist it in the bebaring-bushing housing and get a new surface to have the rod rotate in.

The spring that keeps the Brake arl loaded to the Brake Activating Rod is available at hardware stores. You have to get a longer one and grind-off some of the extra length.

I also added a nylon washer to the end of the spring at both ends to help with the squeak when the brakes are applied.

So what your saying Blue is that I should'nt have a problem with the virago brakes. And Rick I have tried to shine the inside of the hub but I do not have the materials around the hose to clear out all of the oxidation, also the springs are in such good condition the looked to have been replaced but talking to the owner i got it from he said he didn't change them and the bike wasn't ridden for a long time before i got it. Its funny when i took the back tire off the padding of the brake was dislodged and just floating around in the hub i guess the epoxy that held it to the shoe just disintegrated from old age maybe? Thanks for all the help guys and I'm gonna post some picks of the beast soon.

Just adding a question to this thread... my xj's rear brakes squeal badly when applied. The dude I bought the bike from said he wasn't sure why it did this, he also downplayed the importance as he like people to hear him coming. The brake works fine but its just noisey as hell,

    Easy fix?

Easy fix, pull the rear wheel and remove the brake shoes. Take some 200 grit sand paper and deglaze the brake surface inside the wheel. Then reassemble everything.

Plus ... be sure to have the Leading and Trailing Brake Shoe in the right Place.

On Rear Brakes ... It is of the utmost importance to Chamfer the Brake Lining to remove the hard right angle off the edges of the brake material.

If you take a set of Rear Brakes and throw them on without rounding-off the hard edges ... you can just about guarantee that they are going to squeal on you before too long.

A simple Chamfering of the edges eliminates the harsh angle at which the material and the drum come together and prevents the Rear Brakes from squealing.
