LED turn signal conversion woes

To make a long story short-ish, I replaced my rear turn signals with LEDs and now I have an interesting symptom: When my indicator light cluster is plugged in the turn signals both come on at once (doesn't matter if I activate right or left) and my indicator light does not illuminate. When I unplug the indicator cluster the signals work as they should. My thought is that because there is continuity through the original incandescent bulb that the two signal circuits are bridging through it, causing both to light.

I have seen on some videos where people replace the indicator bulb with a compatible LED version. I have also heard talk of adding diodes to the indicator bulb to, I would assume, prevent this crossing of the L and R circuits. So I guess my questions are:

Should I replace the bulb with an LED?
Should I add diodes on the leads going to the indicator bulb?
    Should I do both?
Will doing one or both of these allow my indicator light to work again without bridging the signal circuits?

One thing that is throwing me for a loop is that the indicator bulb does not have a ground wire. So I am concerned that maybe it was grounding through whichever lead was not "hot" before... Is blocking that two way connection going to not allow it to ground (and illuminate)?

And will an LED bulb be able to function with both the green and brown leads as inputs on opposite sides?

This is great, thanks! Do you happen to know if I can still run the standard incandescent bulb in the indicator? That should work, right?

Yes you can. All it does is stop one signal from energizing the signals on the opposite side. Basically, it's just a couple of diodes to isolate the left and right sides from each other but still activate the light on the instrument cluster.

This fixed the indicator light issue. I also ordered a motorcycle specific flasher relay from superbrightleds which fixed my no-blinking issue as well. Pretty stoked right now!
Thanks to this community for helping me through some issues :)

This community is the best. I'd have not been able to re-commission my 750 Seca without them. She's 41 years old now, and as reliable as any new motorcycle.

Could you post link of the led flasher relay you purchased? I need to get one from my 82 Seca.
    Thanks,
