    Hey everyone.

I'm trying to get my '82 XJ550 Maxim carbs tuned up, and I've run into a bit of an issue with the pilot screws/idle mixture screws. I've ordered some new ones from several places and they don't seem to fit right. The (what I assume to be) original screws I pulled from my carbs have a shorter "shaft" and more threads engagement when fully seated. The new ones have a longer shaft and less thread engagement. This makes it so that with the new ones I cannot start them off at the recommended 2.5 turns out; they only get about 1.5 turns out before the threads disengage. Is there a way to make these new ones work? Or is there a place to buy new screws that actually fit these Mikuni BS28 carbs?

Image so y'all can see what I'm talking about:

Yep. He will get you the correct screws. What was wrong with the original screws?

Well, I really just need one, I guess. Was missing in carb #1 when I bought the bike.

An update for the sake of completeness on this thread and for anybody that happens to have this problem in the future:

Neither of those screws in the original posting were correct. They are both course thread; the Mikunis should have a fine thread. The correct screws are the same length and size as the larger ones in the original pic, but with finer threads.
