Hi I recently bought this xj700 it's an 85 and was unsure exactly what model it is. Could anyone enlighten me please? I bought it as a non runner so need to look into that next.

    Thanks

From what I can see I would say either an 85 or 86 - XJ700N or XJ700S. Basically an air cooled 85 or 86. The VIN or casting number on the engine will tell you for sure.

Unless it's an American import it's unlikely to be a 700, they were never sold here. So 650 or 750 Maxim, and the front brakes tell me it's not a 650. Engine and chassis number will confirm (oh, and there is a cc volume number cast into the cylinders behind the downpipes, caked in mud).
If you're not going to put the airbox back in I would be looking for some decent k&n filters, and even then be prepared to spend some time changing jets etc to get it running right. Whatever you do, make sure the insides of the carbs, jets, passages are spotlessly clean first.
Technically in the UK that bike is in need of an MSVA, since the chassis had been modified....

Looks like XJ700 wheel spokes and front brakes.

Hadn't clocked the wheel spokes - makes it an American model then?

    There are lots of clues:
    1. Tank
    2. Ignition coils
    3. Instrument cluster
    4. Wheels
    5. Brakes
    6. Trim piece on side of carb
    7. The shape of the frame under the seat and behind the swingarm pivot

    XJ700N or XJ700S

    Looks like 700 xj
Mine has 4:1 headder and like yours also has pod filters.
It is 10% over main jet from stock, dont ask me # but remember 10%
Also needle lifted, clip down, one slot.
    One size bigger pilot.
Runs good but that setup with no vaccuum or backpressure has mad lag if you mash the throttle below 4_5k also doesnt like cruise below 3k rpm.
Keep revs up its mint n fast.
If you wanna accelerate, just downshift lol ;)
