I have an 82 XJ 750 Seca R. I love the thing with all my heart but boy do I wish it was louder. I have heard some people say just take out the baffles. However, I am worried about messing with the backpressure on the engine and don't really want to have to retune my carbs. Any thoughts or suggestions?

If you have a standard Yamaha system on it I would leave it alone, but then again I don't know if removing the baffles would upset the way the bike runs. Other members who know might chime in. Hope you get the solution you want.

I have heard XJ's with baffles removed. Yes, it was much louder but not in a good way. Think lawn mower running into a big tin can. Some mufflers are needed to mellow the noise.

I have a Motad 4 into 1 system on my 900f but I did not have to alter carburation. Bike is standard apart from the exhaust.

Exhaust sound, like many other things, is so very personal.

When I bought my '81 XJ550RH Seca back in 2001 as a homely non-runner for $300, and brought it back to life, it came with a scraped and dented Kerker 4-into-1 exhaust.
It sounded like heaven. It had a growl and throaty bark that grew hair on my arms every time I blipped the throttle. The bike also ran like a scalded dog. And -- idiot-- I threw the muffler away because it looked bad, and have regretted it ever since.
Now that I've converted the bike back to the stock 4-into-2, I've kept an eye out for vintage Kerkers, to no avail.

Rather than gamble on adapting one of the new Kerker exhaust systems (none are made explicitly for our old bikes), I've bought two of the "tunable-disc" Supertrapp universal Megaphone mufflers. You add/remove disks to increase/decrease backpressure and volume.
They work fine for what they are, and they're not cheap like an EMGO megaphone muffler, but they don't have that same heavenly Kerker sound. That's unfortunate, because Supertrapp has owned Kerker since 1991.

Anyway, you could give those a try if you're so inclined (and if they're still available).

Keep it stock. Don't mess with the carbs, breather or exhaust and you will be much happier in the long run.

I have one of the Pro Sport 4-into-1 systems on my 81 SECA 750 and while I have not grown any hair on my arms it does give the bike a really deep sports bike sound above 5000 and takes on more of a throaty howl above 7000 to the redline. The pipes are good enough for a sandblasting and repaint but it has not been all roses. Oil changes are a chore with the filter housing being trapped between the #2 & 3 pipes and the main plug dumping the contents all over the pipes seemly small issues compared to the carb tuning it takes to get things matched... I'm still working on this. Dropping a set of aftermarket pipes on is going to open a new can of worms if you're not experienced with the needed tuning and pulling the baffles are going to make the stock system sound like a pissed-off 2-stroke on crack. I wrote the book on how to piss off the neighbors and this is chapter-3. Now one could argue I should go with the spin-on conversion for the oil filter but that doesn't solve the high end lean, I'm running the stock air box with a stock paper type WIX filter and my valves are on the tighter side of factory spec.
I have to concur with Dave in Ireland, not making this is personal attack but there are so many inexperienced intentions that cause far more problems for the next guy who has to clean up the PO's mess because he gave up out of frustration, this is where I'm at with my SECA 750. I guess the one thing I have going is 35+ years of experience with bikes going back to my pre-teen years and have cleaned up my fair share of PO messes, they have taught me a lot.
What it comes down to is if you want to go with the unknown be our guest, plenty here willing to sell parts to those who have burned their pistons down from a lean-out, my best advice is to keep it stock and ride without the noise fatigue. The only reason I'm running the Pro-Sport system is because that's what came with the bike and I'm not ready to break off the mounting studs yet.

    Loosen the headers off.
Pegs with some cardboard on the spokes.
    Hard wire the horn.
Yell at the top of your lungs.
So many ways to aggravate your neighbours.

I've been known to run thru the middle of town on a Widowmaker with straight pipes and various thumpers after midnight most notably a Honda 500XL.

    I understand this.
When I was a kid I vividly remember a bunch of us racing up and down this street, in the middle of the night, having a ball of a time.
A guy came out of a house in pjamas and waved me down and said... We are trying to sleep, can you knock it off.
I am now that guy in pjamas. It gets on my wick.

Know where you're coming from. I'm just a few hundred yards from a trailer park full of loud & obnoxious fools who have nothing better to do that guzzle beer and run their Ego-Diesel trucks up and down the highway in the middle of the night full throttle spoolin' up their turbos. I have no problem tuning up my SECA at sunrise and taking it for a run thru the park.

Lol at all this - yes it might seem a good idea to make a load of noise, peeing off the neighbours is never a good idea.
Having said that, my Seca has a 4 into one, and it sounds really nice, very different to the stock 650. But open pipes - you can keep them.
