The starter button on my XJ650 literally broke off under my thumb last week. Ordered a replacement and took the entire throttle / starter button / kill switch assembly off the bike to strip and re-paint it.
Now that I put the new button & spring back in and re-mounted the whole assembly the starter won't turn over. I took it apart and re-checked everything and found the kill switch wires got a little crimped.
I know the kill switch prevents ignition, but does it also prevent the starter from engaging too? I checked continuity on the starter button and get partial continuity when the button is released and full continuity when the button is pressed.

Another odd thing is that I get a neutral green light even if the bike is in 2nd gear or higher. The light does go out if the shifter is in 1st.

Very perplexing as right now the only other thing I have disassembled is the front brake master cylinder as I am waiting on parts for that.

On some of the early versions of the XJ's the starter button connects to ground through the handlebars, so you need to have the control mounted. And, if you painted anything that was meant to be grounded when assembled, you may need to remove that paint.

It you pinched the kill switch wires you may have blown the ignition fuse, so make sure it is OK.

Nailed it! Blown ignition fuse. Already taped up the kill switch wires and tested it.
Thanks, that was driving me up the wall.
