bike will run for an hour then just turn off

    the battery is dead and the alternator reads 12 volts on the tester could it still be missing amperature......any ideas of where to start.

    At the beginning!


    Check your wiring. Are all your connectors clean and happy, in particular the ones around your battery and regulator? Check those are all OK.

    Is the voltage rising when the engine is running? Attach your meter to the battery, take a note of the standing voltage on the battery, then start her up and rev to above 2000rpm and check. You should be seeing 14.5V or thereabouts. If not, is the meter rising at all with revs? If so, how high compared to standing voltage?

    If not, you have a few things to check at this point...

    Firstly, field coil in your generator. If that is knackered or not getting voltage, your stator is doing sweet FA. Likewise, if the field coil checks out ok but the stator does not, you're not generating electricity.

    You need a fairly sensitive and accurate meter at this point, as you're measuring resistance in the single ohm scale.. Anyway. Take a measurement on the (checks manual..) Green and Brown wires that go to your regulator, from the plug that goes into your motor. You should be reading 4.5Ohms, give or take 10%. If so, all is good.

    Check your stator resistance. This is the tricky one if your meter is not up to scratch. White-White wire. You should read 0.5Ohms, again with 10% tolerance. Now, the tricky bit is this, for some meters, will read as a dead short, which is not a good thing in a stator. Your meter needs to be able to read a small difference between a dead short and .5Ohms. If it can, you will see that small difference and you should be ok. If it can't see that difference, you'll never know for certain! Of course, if those wires read as infinity, you need to do some investigating, and if you're lucky it could be as simple as a dodgy connector.

    Next, is checking the regulator. Not got time to go into that now, need to get going and drop the kids off at school!

    thanx for the help will do have a fluke meter so its accurate now just doing the procedure.......al.so another thing i was told was to change the brushes sice they have never been changed?

    hey got it fixed.....checked it out took it off cleaned the stator and checked the brushes all checked out good....found that on both harnesses 3 wires were burned apart completely.... alluminum wire so i couldnt5 solder so i just double crimped them and know it works fine... had one dead cell in the battery but fixed that by cleaning the battery and putting some new acid in runs great now and holds charge even with a h4 halogen headllight.
