Hey all, just picked up a 1981 xj1100 maxim, it was cheap and needs some work, I'm not new to motorcycles or wrenching but I cannot seem to find the model of these carbs anywhere online, if anyone knows the model and/or where to find a rebuild kit I would be appreciative, anything I should know about these bikes?thanks!

    Welcome to the forum.

I am just getting my XJ1100 on the road. How bad at the carbs? If you take your time, you should be able to clean them up. Keep posting your updates on here and I will follow along. These bikes sure do run nice when you get them dialed in.

One of the first things you will want to check in that fuse box, replace it with a blade type fuse holder if you can. Looking forward to your refresh on the bike.

The carbs are off the bike and it's not running, it's been in a field for a few years, all the fuel hoses and intake boots are dry rotted and cracked so I'm not even gonna try and run the carbs, I'm gonna rebuild them but I'm struggling to figure out what carb kits I need, I will look into replacing the fuse block, is there an issue with it or just outdated fuses themselves?

The glass type fuse holes copper gets weak and breaks over time, that is all.

So, this sounds like a heck of a project if it is a field find. Just keep in mind the cost of the refresh and the love of the game.

All the things you will need from for your bike, Len can help you out with. The upper right side of any page on the forum and you can email him for help. Look around the site, there are so many links off the upper right-hand catalog button. Almost anything you need to refresh your bike.

You can do a quick seach online just using your year, make, model of the bike. Be warned about cheap knock off jet kits, Len will make sure you get the right parts for the bike the first time.

Once you post a few times, I think 5, you will be able to add pics to your posts, that really helps the rest of the forum in troubleshooting what is going on.

Ohh gotcha, thanks, I know they're mikuni carbs but from what I can find online there's 2 different types, I also plan to put pod filters and a full exhaust eventually so I'll need to rejet the carbs

That sounds like a huge project you took on. Expect that every electrical connection will be corroded, relays probably won't work, calipers might be frozen up, rear master probably likewise. Sitting under roof for years in rough on these bikes. Sitting in a field....yeeesh. If you're in it for the work, it'll give you plenty. If you're thinking it'll be cheap, likely not. Good luck regardless!

It sat in a field for a year under a tarp, I'm a heavy duty diesel mechanic by trade so I know what I'm getting into and I have the capability, I got it to crank over and fire with some ether but the engine sounds healthy and I feel good about it, I didn't pay much so it should be worth it, if I end up really liking it I'm gonna leave it fairly stock and just keep it next to my 2013 r6, if not I might turn it into a cafe racer kinda thing but more of an "mt07" ergonomic set, I pressed on the rear brake and it did stick slightly making it a pain to push around haha I did a through in inspection beforehand, I passed on 3 bikes before I bought this one, it seems in pretty decent shape all things considered, battery still had a charge
