Hello, I broke my key and ignition cylinder today on my 82 XJ750 Maxim when trying to remove a cracked key and I’ll need to order a new one, I’ve only been able to find one for the Seca so I’m wondering if the Maxim/Seca cylinders are the same before I order a new one as I’ve been unable to find a definitive answer on eBay or Amazon for replacements.

One of the best ways to research this is go to Partzilla or one of a dozen other parts vendors that have the original Yamaha diagrams by model and year. Part #25 is the "Main Switch", part #5G2-82508-50-00. It is the same part listed for the XJ750J (Maxim) and the XJ750RJ (Seca). So you should be good with the Seca parts.

If you want to get deeper into it, you can pull the lock cylinder from your old one, or even the individual wafers from the cylinder and swap to the other if you want to keep your current key...if you happen to have a spare to your broken one.

Thank you! No, I just got the bike yesterday and it was the only key, I’ll check out those sites when cross-referencing part numbers next time. I appreciate the help.

When I was looking for a replacement ignition switch, everything I found was much too expensive for my budget. The solution I found was to buy an XJ650 ignition switch and swap the bottom aluminum mounting bracket and the internal black rotating contact plates. The plastic outer shell and the lock cylinder itself are interchangeable between some models, with the only difference being the mounting bracket and the wire harness (1 vs 2 connector blocks). Chacal/XJ4Ever has a great guide to disassembling these ignition switches at https://www.xj4ever.com/clean and lube the ignition switch.pdf.

Thanks, I’ll check it out before ordering anything. I ordered a Haynes manual to help simplify things but it’s nice having these forums to look stuff up on.
