Pics are in the gallery. Please take a look, because I have a few questions:

    1) note the exhaust. All four pipes come down to that one exhaust pipe. Anybody know what brand exhaust that is, and whether I should know anything special about it?

    2) Note the hose that is disconnected. After looking through my Clymer manual, I think that's the crankcase breather hose. Am I right?

    3) What is the crankcase breather hose for - what's it do?

    4) Where does the big end of that hose go? It isn't shown in the manual.

    5) Note the chrome air filters. The port for the disconnected hose is just below these.

I'm a new rider, so this is all a learning experience for me! Any advice/comments are welcome.

That is the breather tube. The port below the carbs is how the engine releases pressure. Yours is disconnected because it has pod filters instead of an airbox which the hose connects to. Best option is to buy a breather filter from denniskirk.com and keep stuff out of the crankcase. Don't know about your exhaust, but someone will. Nice bike. Looks like it has been well kept so you should happy with it. Make sure you go over it and check everything in the clymer manual for a 10,000 mile maintenance check.

Not sure about the headers, but the muffler looks to be a supertrap. Bluemaxim answered the rest, and I agree with him, get a filter on the thing before you put very many miles on the bike.

you can get ones from you're local autoparts store too, althought they are designed for cars it doesnt take very much at all to get them on the bike. The added bonus of not havign to pay for shipping is nice too. When i switched over to my custom air filters that's what i did after determining that simply plugging it was a no-no after the plug flew off and is since missing. I like the look of the air cleaners and the cafe feel to the bike in general. Hope it brings you much enjoyment.
