Decided to take the 900 over to one of the local dealers this morning for their Yamaha test drive day. Pulling out of the neighborhood like I have 1000 times before and BLAM! Before I even realize what has happened, I'm lying on the ground in the middle of the road. WTF!?

Apparently, somebody spilled something on the road. No idea what it is, but it is black and as slick as marbles. As soon as I hit the throttle, the back end just totally went out from under me like I was on ice.

The worst part is, my beautiful 900 is now all torn up!:mad::mad::mad::mad:

Got both turn signals too and the face shield on my brand-new helmet that I just got 3 days ago.

    Aaaarrgggghhhh!!!!!!

I don't even know what this stuff is. I've never seen anything like it before. Slicker than sand on the road, and harder to see since it blends in. I could literally skate on it with my boots.

    upload_2025-6-21_12-31-17.png

This was when I came back a few hours later and it's more spread out now. You can see where cars have been spinning out trying to get out in the traffic. Guess I am lucky nobody came along and ran me over.

    upload_2025-6-21_12-37-23.png

So, needless to say, I'm going to be in the market for some parts again. I know there is pretty much no hope of a replacement exhaust, so hopefully I can buff it out to be less noticeable. The fairing needs to be repainted anyway, so I can probably smooth that out a bit before paint. The turn signals aren't too bad. Just the lens on the front. The scratches on the back one aren't too noticeable. Probably can't do much with the mirror so I'll be looking for one of those at some point. That crank cover is definitely history. Anybody got one?

Just really pissed that somebody dumped a load of whatever that crap is and just went off and left it. It's a major hazard. I called the city to come take care of it. Hopefully they'll get it cleaned up before it claims another victim.

Thats a bummer it's a nice bike. Good job it was not on a corner when you were going faster. I haven't seen that material before.

Yeah, could have been a lot worse if I had been really trying to get out in traffic quickly, or if I had been trying to go around the corner at speed...or trying to stop...

Not too bad anyway. Banged up my knee a little and shoulder is sore. But those will heal on their own eventually. Wish bikes could self heal.

Fairing seems repairable, but let me know if you need one.

Yeah, I think I can probably salvage the fairing. It has a big crack on the other side that I need to fix too, and the paint is a bit faded so I was planning to paint it eventually anyway. Wasn't planning to do it anytime soon though. :-/

You don't by chance have the oil pump cover do you? That's the first thing I need before I can do any more riding with it.

Anybody know if those covers are interchangeable with any others? When I put in the part number on eBay I get lots of similar looking covers but with slightly different part numbers, mostly for 750s. I suppose I could try swapping with my 750 and see if it fits...except it's behind a bunch of stuff in the garage at the moment and I can't get to it.

For anyone interested that doesn't already know, the oil pump cover off of an XJ750 Seca does physically fit on the 900. That being true, I am guessing most of them are interchangeable at least for mechanical fit between the various models.

As luck would have it, I just happen to have a spare 750 motor up in the loft, so I climbed up there and performed some minor surgery on the willing donor. It doesn't look like the original 900 cover, but at least I can get it back on the road without fear of what might enter through the gaping hole my original now has. That gives me time to watch for a decent deal to come along on fleabay without having to lose a summer of riding.

Also found some decent deals on NOS parts for some of the other damage too, so other than the pipe, I think it'll mostly be back like it never happened by the time I'm done.

It appears to be regrind poly or nylon. I work in plastics and that really looks like fine regrind TPO. Hit it with a BIC lighter, if it burns yellow with oily black smoke its TPO. Got a plastics injection plant in the vicinity?

I'm glad you're alright, bike can be repaired but good dudes are hard to come by.

No plastics manufacturing around here that I know of, and this was actually exiting a fairly upscale residential area with multi-million-dollar homes, so not really anything industrial around at all.

There is some construction going on down the road and at first, I assumed it was something from that. But when I went back to look later it didn't seem like anything related.

Unfortunately, I didn't keep a sample because I had nowhere to put it.

Sometimes glass filled nylon is used as a blasting medium as it doesn't remelt well, it's good for lighter metals or things that could be damaged by impact. Without a sample in my hand it's hard to say for sure other than it's a regrind of some sort but it's fine enough to blast with.

You might put engine bars on it when you repair it. Glad the crankcase was not damaged.

Yeah, seriously thinking about it. Although they wouldn't have done much for the fairing, turn signals, or exhaust, they are good insurance for the engine.

The side covers of the 650/700/750 physically fit, but obviously don’t match. as you know, the 900 cover is a “two piece” cover (not counting the attaching hardware on the inside)….. and actually, it’s “three piece”…… cover, gasket, base)

The turbo cover is the same as the 900 except it’s black.

If you go to my forum on RickCoMatic’s 900, zoom in on the engine covers there— he actually has the 650/750 covers on it.

Let me see if I have an extra 900 cover.

mirror is the same as the 750 seca, use your 900 stem

muffler, can’t help there…… mine are all slated for a bike already.
