xj750 heft

@chacal, Len, I have a technical question for you...... what is the weight of the xj750 engine? Minus the starter. And question #2, how come this one is (feels) at least 30% heavier than it did when I took it out some 6 months ago? Are those new starter clutch parts that much heavier? They got some sort of new super gravity? I know it can't be me and the calender.....
Seriously though I would like to know what it weighs.

Well, I've never weighted an engine, but they do seem to get a bit heavier with age........

I'd think that Dan's estimate of 175# is probably pretty close, the curb weight of the entire bike is 478# (and that includes fluids and fuel.....which account for probably about 40 # or so).

 

I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and get a crane scale so we can put this to bed.

 

I put a 750 engine on an old family bathroom scale and it came up at 160# minus the starter and alternator armature. It sure felt like more than that though. Must be that a progressing calendar makes gravity more powerful.

 

The last time I lifted one was a couple years ago. I’m not a small guy by any means but certainly not any sort of strongman. And I feel every one of my 56 years. At any rate, I decided to invest in a block and tackle and not do that crap anymore. The $40 or so I spent for some channel to span a few rafters and the block seem cheap compared to a hospital stay.

 

I too have a block and tackle in my shed. Sure does come in handy with sometimes. No reason to hurt yourself when other hydraulic or mechanical means can help you out.

 

Ditto that. Used to (just about) lift a GS850 engine from the floor to the bench but that was a long time ago. Block and tackle made things much easier.

This is an XJ650RJ engine with starter. Starter is just under 5 lbs

I'm sure there is some variance in the 650/700/750/900 engines - but I can't imagine it's more than a few lbs
