Hi, I'm in the UK and have a have a XJ650RJ import, the TCI for the bike is TID14-08 5V2, this is very difficult to find here or in europe, would any other TCIs work on the bike, l can get hold of 5G2 date code items of TID14-08 or 06 models, which are for the XJ750 l think obviously l have to have 5 wires on the lower connector for the side stand interlock, also in europe they list an 11M TCI for XJ650s , your help would be much appreciated.

Hi, I've contacted Carmo nl about their replacement TCI for the XJ650 750 seca maxim bikes and they say it might work with an XJ650RJ but they can't say for sure, and they are the experts!!, at 300 euros a time that's a very expensive maybe.

    OK, good to know.

Note that this "5V2" TCI is the same as used on 1980 and 1981 non-YICS 650 Maxims here in the states.

And goes to show whenever in need of a TCI and you query eBay you need to search for "CDI." I guess you have to be part of this forum to correctly call it a TCI

    Warning: Nerd alert

Note that 5V2 is the frame code for the USA XJ650RJ.
Note that 4H7 is the frame code for the USA XJ650G/H (1980/81 Maxim)
Note that 4K0 is the frame code for the XJ650 in Europe.

These are all non-YICS bikes with a mechanical tach.

The strange thing is that the 4K0 bikes in Europe came with a "4H7" TCI. That is somewhat weird to me - why?????????

What the heck would the difference be? Did they jet them differently and that affected the timing curve??

At any rate, my guess is that you could probably take one of those 4H7 TCIs that one would find in Europe and it would work just fine.

Follow up - looks like the only difference in carb setup is the needle.

Y-10: used on all USA market XJ650 (except Turbo) models, 1982-84 XJ650 Canadian bikes, and 1982 XJ650 Euro (model 14R) carbs.
    Y-11: used on all 1980-81 XJ650 Euro (model 4K0 and 4K1) and XJ650 Police (37G) carbs.
Y-12: used on all Canadian 1980-81 XJ650 Maxim, Midnight Maxim, and Canadian 1982 XJ650RJC Seca (non-yics) models.

I think the difference is the safety ignition cutoff. It is not present on the 4H7 TCI, whereas the 5V2 does have it.

    Rooster53...as always....is correct.

Also, the "5V2" and "5G2" are not date codes, they are TCI ID numbers that more-or-less correspond to the models they were used on.......the 5V2-10 is used on the XJ650RJ models (frame code is 5V2), the 5G2-10 is used on XJ750 Seca (frame code 5G2) and many other XJ750 air-cooled engines.....as well as the non-Turbo XJ650 models with YICS engines.

TCI's actually do have a date code on them, it's stamped into the little silver square on the decal.

The "TIDxx-yy" numbers generally correspond to the TCI ID numbers (e.g.: all 5V2-10 TCI's are also marked TID14-08, while all of the 5G2-10 TCI's are also marked TID14-06, etc.). And generally, at least within the XJ series, each different TCI has a different color label (the 4H7-10 TCI unit has a black label, the 5V2-10 has an emerald green label, the 5G2-10 has a red label, etc.).

Question: can you interchange TCI's between bikes?

Within a limited series of bikes, yes, although performance may suffer a bit due to the different advance curves on different TCI boxes. And of course, as Rooster mentioned, some TCI's do not have the terminals and internal circuitry for some of the "later" safety system components (mainly the sidestand safety switch relay teminal),while other units have special features (XJ650 Turbo TCI's have additional terminals/internal circuits for an intake vacuum pressure sensor, an engine-knock sensor, a laying-the-bike-over sensor, etc.).
