82 XJ750 Head Studs

    I just finished removing the head on my 1982 XJ750 due to a broken exhaust stud. I noticed that some of the head studs had some pitting. I can't find any new ones online and the only things i can find on xj4ever is are the dowel pin / stud collar. Any advise on either finding new studs or cleaning up the old ones would be appreciated. While the head is off, is there anything I should look at or replace?

    Are you referring to the long studs (head to upper crankcase) or some of the short studs on the front and rear of the head?

    CYLINDER HEAD & JUGS HARDWARE:

    The long studs, their washers, and crown nuts that secure the cylinder head and jugs to the upper engine case take a lot of stress and heat, and it's not a bad idea to replace these when doing a head service or a full engine rebuild, as proper torque values may be difficult (if not impossible) to achieve on used, stretched, and (typically) very rusted studs. NOTE: originally, some of these long studs came with a black plastic outer sheathing which is not always present on the replacement studs, but can be ordered separately below.

    Additional hardware pieces used to insure the proper alignment of the cylinder head to the jugs, and also at the bottom of the jugs to insure proper alignment to the upper crankcase. These stud collars (or dowel pins) typically are rusted and semi-or-fully seized into their bores after years of use, and all of these locators and their associated o-rings and gaskets should always be replaced whenever the cylinder head or the jugs are removed.

    There are also threaded studs (and associated washers and nuts) that secure the head to the jugs (typically at the front and rear of the cam chain tunnel), as well as a forward stud and hardware that secures the bottom of the jugs to the upper crankcase, which should be carefully inspected and replaced if needed whenever the head or jugs come off.

    On the right side of some heads, there is a casting passage block-off SCREW and WASHER. Some early model heads had all four of these casting passage openings sealed off with a non-removable plug, but later model heads used a screw with a gasket (reason for this change is unknown). This special screw incorporates both a hex-head and a phillips-drive screw slot.
