1986 XJ 700 maxim front fork replacement

Hello! My front inner tubes are pitted so they are bringing up fork oil. I’m looking to either replace the inner tubes or just the whole front end. But I don’t know what aftermarket parts would be compatible with bike. If you have any ideas please let me know! Or if you know of a website to buy inner tubes.

 

Used is your best bet.
I suspect your forks are same as the XJ700X maybe the Viragos of that year also.
Go to an on-line Yamaha parts dealer and find your inner fork tube part number.
There is sometimes a click to find where used. You need to widen the boneyard and classified search. Ebay is a good source

Can you get the forks re-chromed?

 

Check with FranksForks.com also for new fork tubes. I have no association with them nor have I done business with them but I did remember seeing a reference to them somewhere. Maybe worth a phone call?

Looks like 36mm tubes from them is somewhere in the ballpark of $350+ vs ebay has used forks for like $100 or so

 

Ow! I had no idea what the price would be. Then again on the other hand you would have new tubes with a warranty (I assume) rather than the risk of the unknown condition of Ebay specials. I would have trouble spending that much for new as well. Unless it was on something really premium.

 

I'd personally have no problem with that, but it depends on enough variables... is it worth the work trying to jbweld and sand down stuff for the tubes, or can I get it elsewhere and not have to worry about it? cost/benefit analysis and all that
