HOW HARDTO TAKE THIS FAIRING OFF?

    OK, I will probably be needing a new bike after an unfortunate incident on Thursday night where the 650 got wiped out while parked on the side of the road. This one is the right price but I can;t stand the fairing... anyone know how hard it would be to remove?

    Sorry to hear about your 650.

    The fairing will come off easily. Problem is the head light and probably turn signals will come with it. You'll have to come up with an alternate solution for them.

    would the headlight off the 650 be a pretty easy swap or is it a bit tricky?

    The headlight is going to be tricky.
    The fairing's nose houses the headlight's mount. There's no bucket just a frame where the headlamp is secured too.

    The later XJ-900 have the fairing mounts secured to the front end; unlike the early 900's which had removable bracketing ... (and an almost fully floating front fairing -- save for the two rear tabs that mounted to the Triple Tree.

    You'll have to drop the front forks where they extend through the fairing.
    All the other fastening points are regular nut and bolt-on!

    Once you get the fairing off ... you have to fabricate a headlight moung after removing the sub-frame that the fairing mounts too.

    Speaking FOR the fairing ... you'll have higher speed and less riding fatigue leaving the fairing ON rather than removing it and exposing yourself to the on-rushing air stream.

    For touring and long-distance riding ... give me a fairing like that one!

    that one looks nice since it does fit and match the rest of the bike. I know ill need to look at windscreens at least, unless I find a super deal on a nice fairing.

    My old XJ900 was an ex-police bike and it had one of those fairings with it. As well as being butt-ugly, it was huge, heavy, vibrated and made the bike handle vaguely at speed. I got rid of it and mounted a single 7" headlight with some generic fork clamps.

    Improved the bike no end.

    Pretty easy - mine had a HUGE mount welded onto the headstem with the fairing bracket bolted to that, and 2 more mounts on the frame (above the motor).

    The hardest thing was hiding all the left over wiring. In the end I managed to squeeze it all into the headlight casing.

    I think you take the bike for a 200 mile ride with the fairing on, then, take it off and then go on a 50 mile ride. I think then you'll wish you left it on.

    That fairing on the later 900's was designed to eliminate the handling problems that the 83~Early 84 Biles had with the "Floating Faring"

    You should be able to get into 3 Digits on the speedo without vibration.
    You can't do that on a 1983 900. The aerodynamics are all off and the fairing begins to hunt left and right for a path through the oncoming rush of air.

    thanks everyone, I probly won;t be getting it anyway. I think I;ve found another 650 for half the price...
