Had the 1100 of that, tied to do a top end. Found out that you have to cut the OHV timing chain to take the head off. No master chain link either. But the price is right.

I will have to pass. You can tell by the left side valve cover that is one of those bikes that you have to break the OHV chain if you need to do a top end. Looks great for someone, just not me.

Here is one I am looking at but don't need.

Just finished the other Seca and this one pops up.

Another one I had to share.

So the deal with that 550 SECA is it's a survivor in the honest sense, I'm trying to get with the guy to take a closer look at it but with the 4th weekend most everyone is doing their thing. It's owned by the neighbor who owns the storage facility so I do have a direct contact number, I want to see if it was born without the faring or if that was deleted later on and if possible hear it run. When I do visit it will be on my SECA.

My friendly neighborhood multi-brand dealer is asking $2000 for an '83 650 Maxim that he claims has clean tank/carbs and is running perfectly:

    https://www.randyscycle.com/inventory/1983-yamaha-xj650-maxim-black-marengo-il-60152-14414300i

It does look nice, even looks like the original mufflers aren't rusty. Sigh. I have put more than $2K into my "free" 1980, and while it is running well enough to ride without any great fear of coming home on a trailer, it is far from perfect...

You know, you need at least two anyway - that way you can make sure at least one of them is always road ready - build some redundancy into the system.

Nah. If I need a "spare" for a bike, then I probably don't need that bike at all. And I can't afford the twenty grand it would cost to enlarge the garage to hold a fourth bike. Anyway, bikes are like girlfriends: while they all expect to be taken care of all the time, you can only ride one at a time...

I listened to the video accompanying the listing. For a bike that's had its carbs cleaned, adjusted and synched, it sure sounded rough.

@Timbox, it looks like your neighborhood is a hot bed of "clean out the old projects" lately. That big XS surely looks like an excellent deal for a great road burner. Are you having trouble deciding what to buy and have for your next project? Me? I am about 4 XJ projects deep and 2 Honda projects "almost" done. It is fun seeing the potential that is out there though.
