Hi all. My 20-valve  X is at 25,000 miles and I'd like to shim the valves before spring.

    My questions are:

    1) where can I find the shims?
    2) will I have to take the measurements, order the shims, and wait for months for them to arrive?
3)what would a reasonable cost to have it done?

    Any other input greatly appreciated!

    Thanks

talk to chacal... he sells things for extremely reasonable prices... i think it was about 35 for 5 shims... don't quote me on it thought also some shops have a valve swap thing where you take yours in and they give you different ones for free-ninety-nine so that'd be the cheapest method!

First accurately check and then double check the existing clearances - you will probably only need 3 or 4, if at all. The pads (shims) are readily available at about $5 each.

The most important thing is to get a feeler gauge with a narrow tip (7 or 8mm).

Uhhh Suggest going to (yikes!) your local yama dealer.
They usually only charge labour and supply the shims Free (there is some significant hours in valve adjusting with the head in the bike, as opposed to a half hour when it's out) Seems that most yamas use the same shims, and these Never wear out so they just rotate their stock. Unexpected bargains.

I was at an open house at my local Yamaha dealer Saturday. Did some reconnaissance on the service department. They post their rate at $42.50 per half hour. I'll bet the flat rate time for the job is at least an hour.

That'll pay for a lot of shims.

I'm going to at least double that, if not more. The MaxX has 20 valves and they're not easy to change. The job requires that the cams be removed to change them out. I had mine done a long time ago along with a carb tune and a couple other little things. I seem to recall that the bill was over $400. That was almost 10 yrs ago when I had more money than sense!

Well I talked to my local yami dealer and got a quote of $150 for the job. They've got the shims. I've ordered a new valve cover gasket for the job, and when it arrives, if they guarentee that price I might just let them do it. I not, I'll do it myself.

    Thanks all!

That doesn't sound like a bad deal at all. If it were me, though, I'd pull the valve cover and check the clearances my self just to make sure that they actually need shimming. If they're out of spec, by all means get the dealer to do them at that price. If they're not, I imagine they'd still charge you the $150 regardless.

they wanted 400 to do a valve adjustment on my bike. I paid five for the bike. It was cheaper to drop the engine and do it myself (ok, I'm in the middle of a restore)

Just to clarify for people not doing a restore. Dropping the engine isn't necessary or helpful.
