okay, there's this bolt with a lock nut just below the automatic tensioner on my 750. Is that an adjustment for the primary chain guide? or maybe one of those "bellybutton" screws that if you remove it, the whole bike falls apart? :)

Just wondering if it's something worth messing with.. bottom end is a bit noisy (not mine, the bike's), so I'm looking at different options to quiet it down.

    cheers

Some automatic tensioners are automatic and some have a a bolt like yours. If you have the bolt you need to follow the directions in the manual to adjust it. You'll just have to get used to the noise though. I wear earplugs.

well, I have the automatic cam chain tensioner. I don't mess with it. But... right below it, is the bolt I'm inquiring about. it's vertical, and looks like the only way to get to it is removing the carbs. it has a lock nut. it looks kinda like the manual tensioner on the 550, but it sticks out of the transmission case.

Sounds like you are refering to the rear cam chain guide holding bolt. The manual says to tighten the bolt until it stops then loosen it 1/4 turn and then tighten the lock nut. This step is done during an engine rebuild and at this point in the manual the cylinders are not even on the case yet.

This has nothing to do with the auto/manual chain tensioner.

Dunno about your Model But I'm thinking it is a "belly botton" bolt
Make Real Sure of what it does.. First.

These bikes don't have primary chains. They have starter/alt. chains.

That Vertical Bolt IS the Rear Chain Guide Lock Bolt.
    Don't mess with it!
If you loosen that Bolt and the Cam Chaim Guide gets away on you ... you'll be pulling your hair out having to reset the rear Cam Chaim Guide.

    Removing the Cams
    Replacing the Guide
    Timing the Bike
    Yadda, yaddda, yadda!
    Work!
