    I have a carb leaking in between #3 #4 carb. It looks like what you would call a float tee but looks like a hose was connected there or something. I got my carbs out and left over gas was coming out( just a little) I havent done a bench test yet. thers another one of those on the other side between 1 and 2 carb and its alot looser than the other and pointing in a different direction. Any help would be great. Thanks :?

    ordale,

    First - Welcome to the boards. I don't believe you introduced yourself in the general lounge which is where we usually welcome new members.

    Please edit you signature info so we can see which XJ you have.

    When you say you have a leak, is it all the time or only with the motorcycle running?

    Still need to know the bike so we know which carbs you have. But if it is one of the drain hoses then it is working as it should. Problem woud be inside the carb a float valve is leaking. Not the easiest fix but a simple one. It requires pulling the carbs which would be the hardest part. Then removing the float bowls and replacing the float valves. This is fairly easy. I would replace all four valves in each carb. All you need is a carb kit for each carb. A member known here as Chacal has them. We also have links to carb how-to's in the links section. These are good to study before pulling the carbs.

    That would have Mikuni carbs so I will recuse myself to someone who knows them better. I do know that they have drain hoses and that still points to float valves. Someone will chime in with direct knowledge of those float valves.

    I had a mysterious leak between 3&4 on my '82 xj750. Tracked it down to the o ring that seal the metal fuel line pipes between the carbs. On the '82, the main fuel line between the tank and the carb inters into a "T" connection between the 3&4. It is a pretty easy repair if you don't mind puling off the carb assembly and separating the 4th carb from the rest. The biggest catch is that separating the carbs will likely require re-balancing them once you have them back on the bike.

    I looked up your bike here <http://www.starmotorcycles.com/star/parts/home.aspx> I believe the part you need is: 822-14147-00-00 O-RING.

    Hope this is useful.

    Isn't # 1 your left knee? Fuel enters between 1 & 2. Re-synch is required to run perfectly, but not required just to run and do more trouble shooting.

    Ordale......your fuel inlet from the petcock is the plastic t-fitting between the two center carbs (carbs #2 and #3) and it does NOT use any o-rings. The aluminum fuel connector tubes that run between carbs #1&2 and between #3&4 does use o-rings (4 on each tube).

    There are also fuel bowl overflow plastic t-cfittings that runs between carbs 1&2 and 3&4....these connectors look just like the fuel inlet fitting, but they're located further "up" the carb bodies. These bowl overflow t-fittings DO use o-rings (unlike the fuel inlet t-fittting) and each one uses a total of 2 o-rings.

    So on the entire carb rack you'll use a total of 12 o-rings. Although the bowl overflow o-rings are not quite the same size as the connector pipe o-rings, the same ones will work for both applications:

    HCP3458 OEM Mikuni fuel line Tube O-Ring, each:
    $ 3.50

    HCP3458SET8 OEM Mikuni fuel line Tube O-Ring, set of 8:
    $ 26.50

    HCP3458SET12 OEM Mikuni fuel line Tube O-Ring, set of 12:
    $ 39.00

    HCP3458SET20 OEM Mikuni fuel line Tube O-Ring, set of 20:
    $ 62.00

    HCP6880 Aftermarket Mikuni fuel line Tube O-Ring, made from a durable Buna-N rubber material, fits just like the originals at a much better price. Each:
    $ 1.00

    HCP6880SET8 Aftermarket Mikuni fuel line Tube O-Ring, set of 8:
    $ 7.50

    HCP6880SET12 Aftermarket Mikuni fuel line Tube O-Ring, set of 12:
    $ 10.50

    HCP6880SET20 Aftermarket Mikuni fuel line Tube O-Ring, set of 20:
    $ 17.00

    By the way, those bowl-overflow vents normally just vent gas vaoprs, not actual gasoline! So you may have another issue to deal with if the leak is actually coming from there. If the leak is coming from the fuel connector pipe, then that's a "normal" problem, as those pipes are normally carrying fluid.

    In any case the carbs have to come apart from each other to replace them. If you decide to do that, I would do a thorough, complete cleaning of the carbs and a rebuild/replacement of the other seals and gaskets in the carbs, as well as replacing the float needle valves.
