Hi, I've been looking for a tank for my 1983 Maxim 750 and ran across this site. This is my first post!! There are lots of great info here. I see that XJ750 and XJ650 tanks can be swapped. Does anyone have photos of a XJ650 tank on a XJ750? How does it look. I read that the XJ650 tank was a good deal smaller, but if that's all I can find then maybe I'll just have to settle for a XJ650 tank. Thanks

Yup, here's my XJ 750 Seca with an XJ 650 Maxim tank on it. It's a perfect fit with no modifications.

Hey, thanks, so an XJ650 tank would fit my XJ750 Maxim as well as it does on your XJ750 Seca? By the way, your bike looks great. Yikes, you just posted #666!!

Most Seca and Maxim parts are not interchangeable. It is best to double check before assuming stuff will fit. A 650 Maxim tank will fit on the 750 Maxim, but will have less fuel capacity than the 750 tank. The mountings on the two are the same, but the overall tank size is different. Also, I believe there is a difference in the petcock/fuel line setup, but I am not sure as to the specifics on that. As far as interchange of parts between different years and cc's on maxims and secas, that is what the XRef on the XJCD was designed for, however keep in mind that it does not cover non-Yamaha parts.

PD, can I get a closer shot of where your tank ends on the back of your frame??

does it end flush with the rear of your frame or does it extend past it a little bit?

The tank sits on the rubber pad in the back, just like the original tank did. I have the front of my springer seat mounted with the same bolt. You can kinda see it in this photo I took earlier.

see that tank goes too far back, I need a tank of similar shape that ends right at the back of the frame. I wonder how I would keep the tank down if I ground down that flat part on the end of the tank??

I guess I don't understand your delemna? My tank rests on the original rear mount rubber like it 's supposed to. If you cut off the flat mount on the rear of the tank, how do you plan to hold it down in the back or keep it from creeping back and falling off the front mounting rubbers?

I guess I'm lost with the problem. I have a solo seat on mine and it fits just fine. I guess you'll figure it out. "Your world dazes and confuses me"!

ok, this is a really bad paint picture but you will get the idea, the red lines are about how far back the stock tank comes, I want mine to end about where the yellow line is, and thats about where my seat will be fabed. as soon as the seat comes in I can finish making the rigid, but thats the idea im shooting for PD

You're probably going to want to watch my build over the next couple weeks, I'm doing the same thing that you want to do. I don't have your problem though, I stretched my front end 8" out and moved the tank ahead enough for the seat.

That's better. I see there is no rear mount on the frame anymore anyways, so ya, I see clearly now!
    Kevineleven,
If you can cut out the front mounts (those rubber bungs that the tanks slips onto) and move the whole thing forward, that would work perfect to mount it. In the back, all you would need is some kind of rubber pad to set it on and a nut welded in the frame to bolt it down.
Come to think of it, that old Maxim frame will come in handy for parts when I start my frame stretching project. Now that it's warming up, I may have to wait till next winter for that project. :(

Yeh, I have already done that, the mounts are on a "T" that I've yet to weld in place on the frame. I also have removed the rear mount and will be remounting it when I decide how I want it to sit.

I waited for the warm to start my project this year. I planned on heating the garage, but never got around to it. It's warm enough now to work with a light jacket, not all bundled up.

Ya, I heard that. It's expensive enough to heat the house, let alone trying to keep the shop warm. It's been in the 40s here lately so it's not so hard to get it up to 60. It takes maybe 1/2 hour and I'm in my t-shirt. I have to crank it up a bit when I paint (around 70) so the paint cures.
I figured I would have been riding more by now, but we keep getting snow about once a week. If I'd have known that, I would've tore the bike apart and done some more choppin'.

im not wantin to hack away anymore at the frame so im trying to figuire out a tank that I can use, I like the shape of a tear drop tank but I cant find any that have a deep enough back bone. out of all the pictures I see the tank is always sitting pretty much on top of the frame and I dont like that, it sits too high, I will need to to drop some. any suggestions?

You might need to check out Ebay for the right tank. Some of the sellers have good photos, so you can see how deep the tunnel is on them. I'm thinking you may need something like a Sportster tank, to find one that's short enough. Or maybe an after market tank? Do a search on "chopper tanks" and you will find some that give the demensions so you know how it'll fit.

i'll do just that. tonight will finish up wiring the bike and the seat should be here any day now, i'll post pics of the seat. then its time to finish mock up for the rigid. I have a battery box that im gonna stuff the battery and wiring in to keep it clean, then im pretty much.....done...wow that would nice for a change. its hard to work on a project when you have 4 other projects and very limited money to work with

I can relate to that, I have another bike that I have to get running for this riding season (85 Honda 700 Shadow) for a friend. So I have that one staring at me whenever I go out to work on my stuff. PD
