New to this site and have been reading for the last week. I just picked up the bike from this craig's list ad:

    http://milwaukee.craigslist.org/mcy/642424416.html

Says it is in '82 650 Maxim. Except it doesn't really look like any that I have seen. The next thing is that the title lists a VIN number of JYA5N8005CAXXXXXX and red. The bike's blue and I haven't check the VIN on the bike (too dark out). Am I even in the right place for this bike? Is it an XJ650? The front turn signals are attached to the headlight assebly.

The bike ran last year but the fool stored it outside. It runs on two holes now with the other two having good spark so carb work is in order. I'll be replacing the fuse box with a modern one, cleaning all the connectors (I had s Suzuki GS850 before this and it had the same problems), changing the fluids, probably going to need need intake boots (carb to engine), need side covers, need to replace the right engine cover (over the signal generator/points I assume), and I need to replace one of the fork tubes. Someone put the bike down pretty and and gouged the sealing surface. But for $250 I couldn't pass it up and it has newer tires. It's probably going to be a bit before I can ride her to work, but shouldn't be too troublesome, I hope...

It is,in fact,an '82 or '83 XJ 650 Maxim. The p.o. has painted the bike, swapped out the stock bars, seat, and front t-sigs (along with other mods, more than likely).

That VIN is an 82 650 Maxim VIN. Model XJ650J.

The pictures also look like a 650 Maxim, except the side covers look too long.

I don't see the YICS logo on the sides of the engine, which an 82 should have. It's possible the paint is gone, the engine covers have been replaced, or the engine has been replaced.

Off hand, it looks like you got a decent deal.

Oh, BTW. They only came in Red and Black. Yours does not have factory paint.

    Thanks guys!

It is a YICS engine. The side covers were fabricated out of thick gauge sheet metal so that is why they look off. The paint job is phenominal so that really got me.

At least I know what parts to get (or for which bike that is). I'll post betting pics later on as I make headway (hopefully).

Looks like once the PO got the Blue Paint spraying-on nice he just kept painting everything that didn't move.

I think he even sprayed the Side Cover surrounds Blue ... unless those Covers are "Home-brew"

    You have a project bike.
Too bad you couldn't have picked it up well before the start of the season.
Looks like you have your work cut-out for you, there.
Let us know how its going every now and again!
