    Hello Everyone,

    I am a proud (new) owner of a 1982 XJ750 SECA with only 19,900km/s all original. It has been in storage for almost 2 years after being safetied with new rubber, fork seals and also being "winterized" (Canadian eh :).. The fuel was drained from the tank and it has been in a garage for this time. Looking for advice on what to do before attempting to start it up, I am mechanically inclined to do most work myself and not afraid to tackle it.

    P.S. I don't have a proper pic of the bike but was wondering the bike has what looks like a factory installed fairing around the headlight, any ideas of what model that was and if that was optional equipment?

    If the fairing is like mine (see my avatar and gallery), then you have a factory original option. If I remember correctly, this option adds a letter to the model. For example, I believe my bike is an '83 XJ750RK and I believe your would be an XJ750RH. (?)

    The frames are the same between a touring model and a 'normal' model. The original headlight bracket is even under the fairing, just someone in the factory bent it against the forks to make way for the fairing. The addition of a cigarette lighter seems odd, but maybe you will use it?

    The trunk and hard bags were also parts of the option. The fairings (and trank/bags) are actually fairly sought after, so feel lucky. You may want to consider asking the PO if he has the trank/bags as they actually quite nice (locking, sturdy, match the style of the bike). Many people remove them because if you lay the bike down, they get mangled, but they aren't hard to fix.

    Nice bike by the way... Sadly just the front small fairing around the headlight is the only item that is still on my bike, pretty much naked other than that. Does the VIN designate the model by chance? Thank you again.

    I would be concerned about the condition of the inside of the fuel tank. You never store a bike with an empty fuel tank. You should always fill it full and shut the petcock off. It's probably rusted pretty bad inless it was sealed inside a plastic bag.
    Clean the carbs and change all the fluids. Check all the electrical connections (they like to corrode over time) Good luck!

    light rust can quickly be removed (like 10 minutes) with a battery charger and a special home made water solution.
    No need to coat the tank with "glop" afterwards.

    I am concerned about the fuel tank and carbs but will figure it out. The prive was certainly right @ $1300.00 with low mileage so crossing my fingers there's nothing too too bad... Thanks again everyone, your suggestions and ideas have helped me big time.

    another way to clean the tank... perhaps more redneck? is to remove it from the bike gather a bunch of marbles (ie: 7-10) count them, and throw them in there. add a little bit of gas 200ml or so and slosh it around (obviously have the petcock off and the cap on) the marbles will bounce around break up the rust without denting the tank. after your arms are tired open the cap and pour the now disgustingly rusty gasoline out. keep repeating the process until the gas comes out as clean as it went in and then your free of rust! add an inline filter to the gas line and you'll be good to go!

    as far east as you can get in michigan 43.027407,
    the H, J or K after the 750R is the year designator 81, 82 or 83 my seca is a Yamaha XJ750RJ since its an 82...

    KREEM used to be the thing for tank refinishing but it seems to not be a favorite here...

    enjoy that bike. ive been loving mine since i picked it up last month....

    I've also heard of people using a handful of assorted nuts and bolts to shake around in the tank to loosen all the crud. And I wouldn't worry too much about them denting the tank unless you put it in a paint shaker. :wink:
