I have a ? about the air in the forks. Im waiting on my repair XJ CD to come, but for now ill ask here. I checked the pressure the other day and there was none. I added some air and the front rose up so I checked it with the gauge and nothing. It seems to loose it the minute I add air. Im only adding like 15lbs. just to check it out. I do not notice any oil leaking from the seals. The thing is, the bike rides nice and is it suppose to have air pressure in the front forks or is this just optional?

There is very little volume for air in there so taking a reading will let the pressure down a lot if you get any leakage putting the gauge on or off.

You can run them from 0 - 17lbs. The seals don't handle high pressure so going over 17 risks damaging them.

In theory you can stiffen up the front suspension by increasing the pressure. I think mine are at about 10.

I suspect almost all of them are at 0.

I just had my fork seals done.

The Tech at my Yamaha dealer says the book is wrong about the 17 psi.

It should be 0-5 psi.

Also use only a hand pump (bicycle or football type) do it slowly and check often. No more than 1/2 lb difference between forks.

I was told only 0-5lbs for my forks as well. I don't remember where, but I remember that being the case.

The first thing I thought of was faulty seals. I have one faulty seal (I will fix it soon, the recessed bolts are completely stripped) so I run without air and I have never had any problem, but I put progressive springs in. It won't cause any problems to not have air, its just a comfort thing. At least that is my understanding

How/where do we add air? My front forks on my 81 xj650 seem a little too "loose" my front end dives down a lot when the front brake is applied..??..

There's no air option on the '81 Maxim's I'm afraid.
