I am buying a 1982 Seca 750 and it looks like it has 4 into 1 exhaust... Does anyone have knowledge of any advantages or disadvantages for this type of bike? Thanks!

My 650 Maxim has a 4-into-1 on it. Near as I can tell, the effects are these:

    1) Looks cleaner, since there's a can on only one side. Totally an opinion thing.

    2) May offer greater airflow than the 4-into-2. This will give you more power, IF the carbs are re-jetted properly as well. This is not trivial to do, but arguably worth it if you know how.

    3) On the 650, the 4-into-1 headers make it IMPOSSIBLE to drain the oil without drenching the headers, and there's no way to get a lift under the bike without crushing them. This is a definite negative compared to the 4-into-2 headers that sweep away from the center enough to do these routine things.

It comes down to what you like on the bike, and whether or not you know enough about the carbs to be fiddling with the exhaust and re-tuning the carbs afterward. Most people who go with a 4-into-1 also figure out mods to delete the exhaust mounts on one side, but they're pretty unobtrusive on the XJs, so personally, I left them. (I didn't do the mod, and the PO had left them.)

+1 on what rhys said. If I had the extra $$$, I'd be going back to stock. Getting the jets right is a pain. The sound can get annoying after a while too.

Ground clearance is also diminished slightly with a 4-1.

    Greetings, Neighbour to the South!

Personally I like the look and sound of a nice 4-1. But it's very subjective. If the bike does have a 4-1 and you want to go back to stock let me know. I have a pretty decent 4-2 off a Maxim that I'm pretty sure would fit your Seca. We could meet in Kemptville and make the exchange!

    Boyz,

The bike looks pretty much stock so I may consider doing a swap for stock pipes depending on how I feel after riding for a bit, first step is to pick it up on Tuesday and get it running properly after being in storage and having an empty gas tank!!!!, Like what was the PO thinking? Anyways with only 19,900 km/s I should be ok, pics to come soon too...

    BAMF... LOL!!!

Make sure you install an inline filter on the fuel line to catch any loose crud that might be in the tank waiting to clog up your carbs!

...cont... Can you tell me what kind of fuel filter to get and where exactly to locate it? Great idea. I'm sure everyone is doing in-line filters these days however I'm still learning as a newbie, very much appreciated...

just about any auto store or bike shop you enter will have them. Due to tight clearances on my bike (didn't want to kink fuel line) I used a small inline filter. Chose clear plastic to see any crud buildup. Also, since i was there anyway, replaced the old fuel lines with good stuff from auto store. (1/4 diam.) <BTW, I used cable ties instead of hose clamps and am quite happy with results... so far at least>

I had to put mine in pronto cuz just added touch of seafoam to gas tank and didn't want anything coming loose to clog carbs. But the 90 degree inline filter Chacal has is IMHO much better. Neater install, lower risk of kinked line. So I'm getting that and will use them from now on.

These are great filters for our bikes, due to the angle they fit perfectly between the carbs:
    Right-angle filter

I've got the very similar straight-through version on my bike - works just fine too but a little more cramped

There's also an eBay seller who sells the Visu filters at a good price with cheap shipping to Canada. Mine ended up being $3.50 each including S&H.

    Have a look:

    Visu filters...

And if you want a box he's got a deal on 20 that works out to $2.75 each with shipping!

I have a 4-into-1 on my 750. A big difference i have noticed is that yes ground clearance is MUCH lower. Speed bumps are my bike's worse enemy now. Performance wize, i much prefer the 4-into-2 sound after riding with these pipes for 2 years. There is a very annopying resonance with the 4-into-1 that annoys the hell out of me at certain RPM ranges. THe bike does feel a lil bit faster, but low end torque is not like it used to be. If i could, i would switch back to a 4-into-2.

Hi all,,,,,I desprately need a set of headpipes for an 83 750cc. If anyone has any they want to get rid of,,,aftermarket, or stock, new or used,,,I just gotta get somthing bolted to the heads.

Prior to loosing the collar flanges,,,I was running a V&H 4-1,,,,I liked it alot. I removed about 4 inches from the baffle to make her bark a little louder. Since I lost the flanges however, I have found out that V&H doesnt make the ppipes for it anymore.
