I went to Flatout today to see if they had the diaphrams for my 82 XJ550, but they didn't even have a part number. Does anyone know where I can get these? What kind of prices am I looking at? They are kind of stiff from sitting over the years. Thanks in advance for any info.

Hey Max, I should have some good used piston/diaphram units available, drop me a note and let me know how many you need.

I was gonna buy 4, they are all stiff and I don't want these carbs to have to come apart again. I figured If I could get a matched set, fine tuning would be much, much easier.

There's an Old School trick for treating those Diaphragms!

You need to look for a bottle of TEAC Rubber Pinch Roller Reconditioner.

It's the stuff that Audiophiles used to wipe-on their Reel-to-reel Tape Recorder Pinch rollers to keep the roller from getting hard and brittle.

The Bottle comes with an applicator, but the applicator is for Pinch Rollers.

I dip a trio of Q-Tips in the Bottle and "Paint" both sides of the Rubber Diaphragm. Leave it on. It conditions the Rubber and the active ingredient stays on the rubber after it evaporates.

Saved many a Diaphragm with that stuff.
You can find it on the web.

Awesome! I inspected all the diaphrams, they are in excellent shape. They are just stiff, so this should work perfectly! Rick you rock! A kid I work with is one of thos "audiophiles" so I'm sure he has some I can use. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again!

Well after searching around aimlessly and getting the oddest looks from people, I broke down and ordered it today. Poeple at retail stores really are clueless. I'll let you know when the carbs are back on, they should be back together and on the bike the same day the stuff comes in.

Go into Circuit City and try getting a needle for a Phonograph Player.
    No dice.

Some things, like Pinch Roller Conditioner, just phased-out.
I'm ordering a bottle from that online store.

Better to have it than want it and not have any.
