Welcome to the site. Sweet project 8O :p. What's the plan for getting reverse gear in that cart?

Most excellent work man. I only have one constructive criticism. It seems to me the pivot point for the axle swing arms is where those 2 bolts are around the midpoint of the transmission. If you want this to be a project of any longevity you will need to move the engine forward so the CENTER of the U joint and the rotational axis of the swing arm are at the same point.

right now there will be no reverse, But using a old starter/Generator motor will be used for reverse once the cart is up and running, the drive shaft from the bike is being used to connect the rear end, but it has been shortend, as for the motor the carbs are being rebuilt, and I am trying to figure out the wiring on the motor, I'm not real sure how the coils and ignitor hook up yet, or even how the charging system works,,

That is being done the pivot point is going to be in front of the motor the rear end and motor will be one unit, the pictures are just showing step 1 of the project. the motor has not been mounted into the cart yet I am using the frame from the bike for the mounts. still lots of work left here are some pictures of the cart it's a 1975 harley davidson, it was a electric cart

Welcome to the forum Colen, I think you are bound to find most of your answers here. I'm not an X'er so I'm not familiar with the 700 intimately but the electrical systems should be fairly easy. There is really very little to them. Do you have the TCI box, coils, and regulator? Those are the only external items I think you should need. I could whip up a schizmo if I only had the oem schematic for your particular engine. I've only the earlier model schematics but I'm sure they will be similar.

I have the coils the, ignitor I believe the regulator is there, as for the TCI I'm not sure what that is, I alos have the diagram for the bike, the motor came with the manual on cd

You have everything you need electrically speaking. I'm sorry, by TCI I meant TID (little black box with two connector ports). Are you schematic literate or have experience with them? Oh yes, you will need to have a battery and fuse block on hand as well (little detail but important).

I can understand schematics I have a fuse block that came with the wiring harness, I will be using a deep cycle 12 volt battery since I have a stereo and lots of lights to run, the wiring harness I have looks like someone had some fun with wire cutters, so that would be a puzzle to put back together
here is a link for the wiring diagram

Haha, freakin awesome man!!!! I love off-the-wall projects like this!!!

BTW Robert, judging by the pics, it's not an X, just a standard XJ 700, so wiring should be the same (or similar) as ours.

I've thought of building a dune buggy with one of these motors in it, actually probably an XS 850 since I have one sitting in the backyard, but the thought of no reverse gear has detered me so far. Might have to see how your starter motor reverse works out, that might be the push I need to do it!

here is another project that a friend of mine did, it's a EZ-GO golf cart with a 850cc suzuki motor in it, the drivetrain is out of a 4x4 polaris, so this is a 4x4 fast golf cart. and it is chain driven. His wifes motor blew up on her 350 Polaris 4x4 and He took the 4x4 drive train which is belt and chain drive and put it under the ezgo. He had a 13 hp honda motor on it at first which was fine because He had high, low and reverse gears. But I like to play in the mud and every time the belt got wet it would not pull.To solve this he put a 850 Suzuki 4 cylinder motor in with all chain drive and did not use the gearbox. Now It's a 79 HP 4x4 golf cart

Are you sure you want to do it this way? How are you planning on overcoming the contant up and down jarring of the motor? Seems to me it will be hard to keep the proper fuel level in the carb bowls for it to run very well. That, plus trying to keep the carb bodies attatched to the motor will be a problem. The carb boots, (intake manifold, if you will), aren't really that strong.

That being said, I really love the project. Just wanted to throw a few questions at you for your consideration. Just playing devil's advocate a little bit. I wish you success, and please keep us up to date. Looks like these carts are alot of fun.

    BTW welcome to the forum.

THANKS FOR ALL THE INPUT RIGHT NOW I CAN USE ALL THE HELPFULL INFO ON THIS MOTOR, SINCE I HAVE NEVER MESSED WITH A BIKE ENGINE BEFORE BUT AS FAR AS MOVEMENT THERE WILL BE NOW UP AND DOWN MOVEMENT ON THE MOTOR. THE UPPER PART OF THE CART HAS ALL THE SUSPENSION MOVENT TO IT.. AS FOR THE WIRING I THINK I HAVE IT FIGURED OUT, THANKS GUYS FOR ALL THE INFO BUT KEEP SOME ENGINE TIPS COMMING THE MORE I KNOW ABOUT THIS MOTOR THE BETER IT WILL BE,, ALSO WE ARE WORKING ON 2 OTHER CARTS WITH PUTTING IN A MAXIM MOTOR IN THEM I CAME ACROSS 3 MAXIM MOTORS LIKE MINE FOR 50 BUCKS EACH. THE MOTOR I'M USING ONLY HAS 12,000 MILES ON IT.. IT'S GOING TO BE A BLAST WHEN IT'S DONE..

I'm going to tackle rebuilding a set of carbs today, is there any tips you guys can give me? I have rebuilt car carbs before, I have the manual on how to do it but is there any shortcuts I should know about?

No New updatess as of now, I have been busy getting ready to move, I'm still chasing parts for the motor, and in the part search I have aquierd 2 running bikes, 1 79 honda goldwing needs a seat and gas tank, but runs the other bike is 84-86 Yamaha fz700 and it just needs some TLC and a few cosmetics, I picked up the honda for 30 bucks, and the Yamaha for 100 bucks

Colen75,. try as I might (I even downloaded and used GIMP as suggested by Sno), I could not get enough resolution from the schematic file you posted to be able to even read the small print, no matter what I did. Could you send a higher resolution pic? GIF or JPG is fine but I need more detail on the schizmo. I'm going to try to get you a nice picture of what you need as you requested.

colen75, do you have reverse in that golf cart? Can you post more info how you rigged up the XJ engine to the drive train? I'm thinking it would be an excellent project or maybe rig up a go-cart or dune buggy for 8O . If you do a nice write up with picture I'd find a home for it here.

SnoSheriff, I have not worked on the cart in a week or so, I have been moving. Once I get settled in then I'll be back on to the project. as for reverse no I will not have it, But we have figured out using a 12 volt starter generator motor will act as a reverse motor, as far as the drive train I got lucky, the gear that is on the back of the maxim drive shaft, was a perfect fit in the spline on my rear-end, But I did have to have to have the shaft shortend, also I will have a disk brake system on the drivetrain. the caliper mounts to the motor and the disk is on the u-joint I will get you pics as soon as I get some updated ones

That could well be one of the fastest golf carts created! :D

I had a spare zx600r engine at one point - always thought it would really make a 200lb go-cart fly... actually if you go to google videos you can find a video of a guy with a gsxr750 gocart... insanity.

It has seat belts already, and yes I will have a roll cage on it. I think I may put some OH SH** handles on it to, I have'nt gotten any work done to it in the last 2 weeks, I have been real busy moving, Once I get my garage put in order, I will be back to work on it. Plus I'm still waitng on parts

    I have your wiring covered.
I'll post what you need tommorrow. The wiring took me the better part of a week to trace down, but there's nothing to it once you know where they go.

It's probably wise to not open the throttle too much. Mine scares the crap out of me @ about 60mph.

I got lucky. After removing the cv joint from the kawasaki driveshaft, I checked the splines to find that they matched. I just removed the c-clips and joined the kawasaki driveshaft to the Seca u-joint so that it could "float" as the suspension moves.
