i coulded help myself.New pods where sitting there in the box waiting for me to get the mainjets i knew i would need.So out came the sawsall and off came the air box.Pods fit great so did the crank breather from ebay.Bike fires right up great but can't get the idle below 3grand.Well be removing the carbs to do a bench sync.I know i will need to go up at least one jet size. But also have a set of ebay-harly slip ons not yet installed so thinking mybe two sizes for the main jet.I have a spare set of stock mains and a propane and gas orifice drill bit set i can get my hands on.My problum is my confustion between posts that say a yics must be used to sync and posts that say the tool is not needeed.I have a set of vacume gauges so i will be fine setting with the gauges. My stock jets for my 550 are 112.5 anyone who's gone throuth this and has any advise would be greatly apprecated .Thanks

not speaking for everyone here, but IMHO, when you're syncing with a set of 4 gauges, YICS tool is not as crucial. Yes, I know, Yamaha says "use the tool" but... You don't ride with the tool inserted, do you?

Ah yes. The siren's song of pods and jetting.

Expect that if you hack up the airbox (or remove it) that you have taken away half of a balanced set. The intake and exhaust on the XJs are largely matched. 99% of the ime installing pods and new jets will result in a shift in the peak power but usually leaves flat spots and very little real increase.

OK. Now that the disclaimer has been stated...

High idle is caused by just a few things; vacuum leaks, open throttle plates, or jetting that requires oddball throttle plate and pilot screw settings.

So the pods are the only change so far?

Due to slight variation in the carbs, YICS passages, engine wear, etc, etc you can get close without the tool. Close enough that the untrained ear can't hear the loping in the idle or low-speed running.

To get the sync dead-on you need to isolate the carbs. That means blocking the YICS passage.

I didn't have to do anything with my pods.. purrs like a kitten on nip.. I did hear that if you modify the exhaust and pods... then you would have to re jet...

Been so busy this week but hoping to pull the carbs tommorow and find whats causing the high idle.as Injuhneer stated only a few things that could cause it and i'll find out.

if you get your carbs sparkling clean and synced then you should be fine without doing jets.... depends on your altitude i suppose. as for me, i did pods a 4-1 exhaust and then bought a kit of micro drill bits off flea-bay ($20 about the same as a new set of main jets) , reamed out the main jets and pilot jets (by hand carefully) and bumped up the jet size.... now she purrs like a kitten and screams like a banshee.... i didn't know an xj could perform and sound the way it does.... i often feel my fingers peeling off the grips :D

So there's mixed opinion on the pod mod. I just put UNI's on my XJ 700 X, and have stock exhaust and stock jetting.
Any suggestions on where to start with air mix screw?
I was hoping to get by without rejetting, but hope doesn't grow grass, save money, or win races  .
Advice would be hugely appreciated, especially from those who have success with the pods + no other mods.
