I read somewhere last years that the choke pull offs are all different. I did not pay attention to them when I dissasembled the carbs, but I can clearly see that they are ever so slightly different. I have an 82 xj750
please if anyone knows how to tell me which one goes where it would be very cool.

Also, it only happens every once and a while but under WOT my bike will some times pop out of 2nd back into nuetral. I read that this is a common problem but is it going to get worse and is there an easy fix?

Does it pop out of gear immedately after shifting gears or does it pop out a few seconds later when you are hard on the throttle again?

If it is the first, then likely you aren't shifting properly. This is often caused by the shift lever being adjusted to the wrong height for you. The other cause is that at WOT the gears do need to be more firmly and more accurately shifted. I actually find it quite a bit more difficult to shift near redline... a few thousand rpm's earlier and it is easier.

If it is the second option - then likely you have some transmission damage. I haven't heard of this frequently in the maxims, although two generations later the 600r had a problem with 2nd gear getting damaged - bent shift something or other... collar I thought but maybe dogs. Frequent abuse of the bike could damage the workings of second gear.

At the moment with no further details I'd be inclinded to think it was the first option - but please more info would be good! :)

    Cheers,
    woot.

2nd Gear is a known problem, and is documented on the XJCD for undercutting the gears that get the edges worn.

I occasionally get popped outta 2nd, but it's generally when I've got WAY up there in RPM's and should have shifted, anyway....

I had my 650 pop out of second a few times. Turns out it was a worn selector fork. The part is cheap but you have to tear the engine right down to replace it.

It is possible that you have a bent shifter. Did you dump the bike recently? I dumped my 650 turbo and bent the shifter selector and couldn't keep it in second. Replace the selector and all was fine.
