what kind of voltage should be comming from the alternator or generator, when cranking the motor with a 12 volt battery charger?

You should see at the very least 13.8 VDC at any rpm over 2,000. It will probably be closer to 12 volts at cranking. Not sure exactly, never tried to measure it. Rectification won't occur until the diodes have been saturated as the rpms increase. Sorry I haven't gotten back to you sooner, wife swiped the computer yesterday and I came home to an empty desk. I'll try to have the harness diagram up for you this weekend.

I'm not sure you'll get any reading at all just cranking it over. I doubt it's turning enough RPM's. Probably only around 200-300.

ok the diagram may help, thanks alot, this may be a dumb question but where is the pick-up coil located? is it internal? remember I have never worked on a bike motor before so this is all new to me. But I am very mechanical inclined..

Well Nick got you started in the direction I was going to go so I'll try to finish it to at least be a little helpful. Looking at the schematic Nick posted you should notice up under the ignitor unit the pickup coils. They are physically located under the right hand crank cover (as you stand behind the engine looking at the carb banks). The plug is down near the alternator. BTW, how did you hook up with 3 engines at $50 a wack? Know someone special? I'll bet more than a few of us sat up and took notice. I'll wait for your next question, Nick might even photograph the coils location for you. Thanks again Nick, we're indebted to you yet again.

I found the motors through a freind, they were not complete, missing all the electrical parts, as for those I found a complete wiring harness, 3 sets of carbs, a complete muffler system and all the electrical componets for 50.00 bucks I thought that was a bargin after doing a few searches on the web, as for the other motors same deal I'm still hunting a good deal on parts I just picked up a running 1979 honda goldwing tonight for 30 bucks, which is also shaft driven, I have not seen the bike yet But i pick it up tomorrow... as for the pick up coil I have'nt seen anything there yet yes a picture would be helful . Thanks guys for all your help

I noted the error shortly after I posted Nick, I didn't crack the book open to verify! I'm mortified! What would I do without you? Your right of course, I lexdixic... er, dislexic. Nice shot of the pickup coils! I didn't notice an unsend button, oh well, I'll keep giving you guys something to do besides listen to me prattle on. The connector for the pick up coils is sitting under the generator aren't they?

Your grey and orange wires are your individual coil pickups outputs. The black wire is the common supply which forms a loop returning through the orange and grey. I have no idea what the black and blue are for, I can't see the rest of Nick's schematic. Best I can do right now.

Glad to help, your golf carts look like a lot of fun!
Do you actually use them on a golf course?
