I love my 1982 Xj750 seca. i have had this bike for almost 2 years now, the odometer stopped working at 75853 miles back in 2002 and the previous owner (a close friend) has had the bike since new. when i bought it off him for $500 he told me that since 2002 he has used it every spring and summer till 2006 and prb put another 15000 miles on the bike. He never treated the bike well he beat on it all the time and has dropped it so many times that he cant even count. On top of that he has never done gaskets or any major engine work to it i.e. top end, valves, cam work, tranny, ect. ect. so when i bought the bike i was expecting to have a tired POS for a year or two and it would die.
Well to the point of the story. I was just recently doing a total overhaul of the motor cause i fell in love with the bike and wanted to keep it. i figured that it needed some gaskets that were leaking maybe rings and new cam and chain setups. well i took the valve cover off and was surprised to see that the chain and cams looked like they were brand new, they had no play or wear the sprockets for the overhead cam had no wear and wern't knife edged at all. i called my bud up and he said hes never done anything other than oil and air filters to it. then i took the head off the bike and looked at the pistons and cylinders and was absolutely amazed to see the it was all perfect no scoring or burning at all. i put new gaskets in and did nothing else to the bike. i have cleaned the carbs every year and my baby still runs like brand new. i REALLY cant believe this bike it is absolutely amazing that the engine is in as good of condition with and estimated 91000 miles on the bike.
Does anyone else have this with there bikes or is mine just a fluke of nature?

Man, your poll is kinda weird...YES means what?

But yeah, my bike has 37k and starts and sounds like new still...can't believe it.

It seems to me that Yamaha built a really crappy 750 in 1972
And didn't release another 750 until 1977, which was way over engineered, and the basis of the legendary XS-11, which our XJ's are like scale model copies of (it).
These bikes are durable, because Yamaha needed reliability.

No fluke. The bikes were built well. Most of the Motorcycle Press had nothing but kind words about the XJ-Bikes back in their Road Test Reporots from 1984.

The Engine's are, in their words, are: "Hard to kill!"
    Believe it.
You have to deliberately and seriously abuse an XJ-Engine before it will fail.

    Neglect is the killer.
If you keep the Engine oil level topped-up and chamge the oil regularly, there's no reason that the bike won't still be going well after 80,000 Miles.

Religious maintenance will give you a life span stretched-out to near infinity.
Not that there isn't a few issues that need to be done in order to insure that.

The Valves need to be shimmed right to avoid burning them.
The Head needs to be done at least once in its lifetime.
The Timing Chain has a recommended interval of 60,000 Miles, buy I have seen bikes gone past that mileage without the new Chain.

It's reliability is in the hands of its owner.
Do the scheduled maintenance and keep the Carbs Clean and there's little to go wrong outside of the Fuse Panel, which self destructs and the Alternator and Starter Brushes which are consumable.

The rest of the things: Tires, brakes and lights and an occasional Battery are expected items the need replacement over time.

But the Plant and the Driveline shouldn't let you down.
    It's essentially Bulletproof!

I find the question rather confusing...Are we answering if our bike is a fluke or if all the bikes are like that?
