    Hello!
I just purchased an 81 650 Maxim and stumbled across this site hunting for information; I'm impressed! I'm so glad to find others who appreciate bikes like mine / ours, and be able to share information, etc.

As background, I answered a small ad in the paper, and found 2 bikes stored in a barn full of chickens; you can imagine what they looked like.... One of them, an '80 XS850 Yamaha, had been wrecked and needed new forks (included with the bike) :? and misc. other parts. The other, an 81 650G Maxim, actually started when jumped. The owner wanted to get rid of them (I guess they were cramping the chickens) and made me a package deal for both.
I didn't take any "before" pics, but will add a couple shots of the XJ650 from after a week of cleaning and "accessorizing" to the photo gallery. The bike runs great, and I love it!!
The only other changes planned immediately are a full windshield (purchased and in the mail) and a throttle lock cruise control. Painting can wait till winter.... Does anyone have directions on how to install the throttle lock? I have never messed with grips/throttles, so any help would be appreciated.
The XS850 will be parted out, probably on eBay, unless somebody is dying to have it as-is soon. If anyone here wants/needs something from it, give me a holler!
Thanks for listening to me ramble, and thanks in advance for the help! :D

Sounds like you came upon a good deal. I highly recommend the Vista Cruise cruise controls. They have two models and you dont want the cheap one. The more expensive one is only $12 bucks more anyway. I have had both the two piece one is much better.
So what windsheild did you order?

I purchased a "Deluxe Contoured Skirted Windshield" on eBay - the same thing as the fupp windshield available from JC Whitney. I think it's the same thing as the Slipstreamer Enterprise; guess I'll find out soon....

Xcowboykc, good score. By the by, I've got the complete front end off of one of those XS 850's. Interested?

Looks like you made a heck of a find, good looking bike.
Cruise control you say. I'll have to look into that. Sounds like something I could use. My right hand gets so tired and numb after a while.

Here's the Slipstreamer lll SO-3 that I put on a couple months ago.

Robert, the new forks came with the XS 850, ready to install! Would you like the rest of my bike to go with your front end? lol

No, thanks though, I'm trying to slim down. Got a car to put together and need the room in the garage. I don't know anyone out your way that would be interested in bike unfortunately. Hope you get both up and running to ride and see which you like more.

If you pick up so Kuryakan grips you can get a little deal that mounts to the outside that rests om the back of your palm. That way you dont need a real grip on the throttle.

My bike came with some sort of cruise control attachment. It was immediately removed for safety concerns as well as legal. If Im crusing along and something comes out in front of me I dont have time to flip a lever and stop...
