I own a 1981 Yamaha XJ550 seca. I was out riding the other day and my clutch cable snapped. I had to hoof the bike back home. Without thinking I removed the clutch cable without making exact notes of where it was threaded through. I had the cable repaired. Through old pictures of the bike and what I remembered I got it threaded through. Now the clutch wont disengage the gears when the handle is pulled. Also the tension is less when the handle bars are pulled to one side. To top it all off the part of the lever holder that holds the brake cable in place broke. I'm very new when it comes to wrenching bikes. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Also, before all this went down I was about to change the handle bars and realized that would change the distance between the handle and the clutch. How does one stop the distance from the clutch lever and the clutch from changing when the handle bars move and how do I adjust the clutch to engage.

there is a adjustment where you can set the tension on the cable hwere it attaches to the lever if you didn't know. Sorry that is all the advice I can give you. As far as the bracket if you need one let me know and I may be able to get you one at a decent price. Good luck!

On the maxim there´s a bracket at the clutch end where a threaded part of the outer cable passes through which then - after adjusting for slack - is held securely with the outer cable´s 2 nuts. Further adjustment is made with the curled knob at the handlebar clutch lever.

Looks like the guys who repaired the clutch cable cut it too long. Can't wait to get back there to have them fix it so I can get back on the road.
