The engine doesn't say YICS on the cover and the valve cover is pre YICS. My 82 Maxim was built in Sept of 81 as I recall and it was a YICS engine. As near as I can remember mine was the 179th 82 built? From the VIN and someone's build date chart. Was this bike perhaps a very, very early 82? It is for sure a FINE looking bike! I'd take it in a heartbeat.

    Cheers,

    Phil

I noticed that, too. After re-reading the seller's info page, it looks like PO changed out the speedo (probably because he hated the 85mph OEM unit as much as I do), but the bike itself is a U.S. version. Besides, weren't the Canadian '82s red?

XJ650RJ Seca models are NOT yics-equipped engines.

All XJ550's, the '82-up XJ650 Maxims and Turbo, all XJ750 Maxms and Seca models, all XJ700 non-X, and all XJ900RK and XJ1100 models ARE yics-headed.

The bike in question is an RJ. The Euro and Canadian '82s had YICS heads. Only the U.S. version did not.

Whoops, fat finger of me typed RK instead of RJ, thanks for catching that! I have corrected it in my previous post above.........

The RJC model had a YICS head? Never knew that!

The bike in the ebay link does not have the YICS engine. If you look at his engine photo (nice clean bike) there is no YICS port bolt visible where it should be!

Allways wondered why mine didn't say YICS.
Looks like maybe an oil cooler on that ride too.

    Good eye, Hound!

Wonder if that is original for a Canadian 650 Seca????

My 650 is non-yics with an oil cooler. The red secas that came out later in the year were yics equipped.

I thought the red ones were Canada only.

The bid is up to 3K on eBay now, and the seller has changed the local sale price listed on his website from $2999.00 to $4500.00!
This bike is exceptionally nice, but 45 bills seems like a lot of cake. I paid three grand for mine in '06, and it was in mint condition with only 8K miles on the clock.
I thought I was overpaying at the time, but I really wanted the bike, and you don't see super-clean, all-original examples for sale very often. Turns out I practically stole it, apparently.
I don't think this guy is going to get anywhere near $4500, though. How many people have owned these bikes and appreciate how good they really are? Of those, how many have that kind of money to spend on a bike like this? As far as I know, the Seca 650 has yet to generate a huge collector buzz.
It only takes one passionate suitor with deep pockets, I suppose, but I'll be surprised if the eBay auction goes much over $3500.00. If it does, I might have to consider selling mine.

    NOT!!!

Sold for $2999.00 after only thirteen bids! I guess I did overpay for mine.

Seriously, though, that's a pretty sweet deal, IMO. With a few simple mods, the buyer could have himself a bike that is more capable, versatile, and dependable (if somewhat slower) than a lot of it's contemporary would-be competitors, and at a fraction of the cost. Not to mention the fact that a mint Seca 650 is way cooler than, say, an FZ6 or an SV650. 8)
