I need to find an airbox for my xj550rj. Someone will trade me my pod filters for an airbox, but his is a xj650rj.

Will the 650 airbox work on my 550?

According to the x-ref only the 81 550RH and 83 550RK will fit your bike.

The local bike shop suggested that the best way to get the bike tuned to run better is to go back to the stock air box. Otherwise, it's anybodies guess as to what the settings ought to be (jet sizes, etc.).

Keep an eye out on ebay, or maybe check some local wreckers.
    Good luck

Trial and error is the cure to correct jet sizes and the following link is from some one with a crude formula for getting it right. Info is XS1100 related but is a good reference for anyone contemplating changes.

That's a great link, but it raises the question:

Where can I find info on the stock jet, needle, etc. sizes? I really don't know whether what is in there now is stock or not. I found a website that says stock main jet is 112.5, but that's all I've found.

My bike is an xj550rj, with mikuni carbs.

My clymer manual has all the sizes for my RH. RJ's are listed as the same.

    Main Jet 112.5
    Needle jet O-8
    Pilot jet 35
    Starter jet 35
    Jet needle 4GZ11
    Main air jet 70
    Pilot air jet 170
    Throttle valve 130

This coincides with the info on http://www.yamahaaccy.com/parts.aspx
Just look up the year and model to get a pic of where each jet is located.

Armed with this good info, I think I'll try to make a go of it with the pods...
