ok folks due to a series of pm with charcal (who is more than helpful) i am doubting the information on what bike i have, engine year, and carb make and model. now i know i could go through and search the forums and find the majorit of the info i need, but the 14 hour shifts keep time ona short leash,

What i thought i had was a 82' XJ750J maxim, with the hitachi (sp?) carburator, which needs a new carb barrel thanks to "a" PO, problem we ran into is according to charcal my carb for that year, engine, and make, should not have the brass enrichment screws it has, apparently they should be steel.

ANY WAY i'm looking for tips on what series of numbers/letters to look for and where on the bike, engine, and carburator, to help me figure out what i have so i can start to get the parts i need.

Thank you all for posting and such.

Lets first ID the bike itself:

Look on the steering tube ("neck") and on the left side there will be a paper decal with the full 17-digit VIN number on it, while on the right side there will be stamped into the metal tube the bike model code (such as 15R-xxxxxx).

With either of those numbers we can properly ID what BIKE you have.

The same sequence of numbers that is stamped on the right side of the steering neck should also be stamped into the engine case, just behind the clutch cover, of a flat machined pad. If those numbers match, then it's the original engine in the bike. If not, then we'll need those numbers, too, to properly ID the engine.

The carbs: the HSC32 and HSC33 carbs are similar but different. The 32-series always used steel idle mixture screws, and the 33-series used the brass screws. Visually, the EASIEST way to identify the 32 vs. 33 series Hitachis is to look at WHERE the fuel line (from the petcock) enters the carbs:

    a) on the HSC32 series carbs, it will enter between the #1 and #2 carb, via a rotating fuel "T-fitting".

    b) on the HSC33 series carbs, it will enter between the #2 and #3 carbs (i.e. dead center of the carb rack) via a rotating fuel "T-fitting".

I, too, have an '82 750 Maxim. Look on the center steering head tube beneath the handlebars. Mine starts with JYA15R -- 15R being the part we're concerned with. That indicates the 750J model.

Hitachi carburetors have the company logo on the side of the body just above the float bowl. As for the mixture screws, I was chatting with Len about this myself; they may *look* brass, but they very well may be steel with a yellowish plating on them.

This week, on the Outer Hitachi Limits, the exciting episode everyone has been waiting for:

    "The Magnet Never Lies."

ok so the ##'s onthe neck and engine case are as follows, 15R-009962, the carb has brass screws that are roughly 13/16th long, tip to top of the threads, the fuel line enters between 1 and 2 and the jets inthe carb are 80 and 225. and its 2:30 am and my shift starts in 4 hours so i gotta get some sleep, sorry it took so long to reply, and thanks for the help given and help to come. later. and again thanks

That's a 1982 XJ750 Maxim! But it shouldn't have brass idle mixture screws, they should be steel, but who knows? The length sound correct, the fuel entry to the carbs sounds correct.
