I know it may sound dumb... but I can't find the fuel filter on my 1986 Yamaha XJ 700. New to the forum. Did a search but couldn't find this specific question answered.

I plan to go down to the parts store to get new oil, filter, etc., but can't find anything online that references a fuel filter. As far as I know this bike is completely stock.

Should be between the petcock and carbs.
    Inline with the fuel line

    - not a dumb question - as you can´t actually see it..:

The fuel filter is located inside the tank, sticking up from the petcock; it also serves as regulator for the reserve tank - it has 2 fuel outlets into the petcock. The "on" setting stops fuel from getting through when appr. 3 liters is left (the front half of the screen) , the "res" setting uses the other filter screen outlet which is unlimited (right ½ in the pic):

Some recommend installing an extra inline fuelfilter between the petcock and carb fuel inlet - if you do so, make sure your fuel line descends all the way.

(this is how one emptied float bowl looked like before an inline filter:

Ok... now to go and take a look.

Another dumb question - if the filter is inside the tank, how would one change it?

One wouldn't. It's more of a screen than a filter. Unless you let your tank get rusty it should be fine.

If you don't HAVE a Filter ... it's not such a bad idea to INSTALL one!

Get the Fram inline, clear, fuel filter and put it in the gas line between the Petcock and Fuel Bowls on the Carbs.

Fram's website shows one metal filter. I guess I'll check Napa to see what they have in stock.

Anyone have a photo of the external fuel filter mounted on their bike?

Here's how I installed the inline Fuel Filter to fit outboard of the Fuel Tank on my 900 without the Fuel Line pinching and binding.

Initally, it was under the tank. But, the angle kinked the Fuel Line and caused Fuel Starvation. This way I get to keep an eye on it, anyway!

hey i just bought a 86 maxim and i was wondering about the pictue below. with the turn key straight up and down it takes gas out of the main tank right? but if i need the reserve tank do i turn the key clockwise so the bottom arrow faces the "res" or counter clockwise to the "pri"? that confused me...

in the on possition the long arm points to on, so it would follow that the long arm should be over the desired possition, i.e. clockwise for reserve.
