My buddy has been having problems with his clutch engaging. It seemed that new plates are in order as the problem has increased gradually. We inspected the plates today and they are worn but not burnt and they seem to have ridges still. Does anyone have any idea what the measurements would be for the ridges? As in, what is the nominal height of the ridges of new plates? I was wondering if maybe the springs were the culprit or if it is a combination of the two. What should I be looking for?

I will try to talk him into getting both the fibers and springs and that should cover it I would guess. He'll have to live with the starter noise though. lol.

I'm not too sure I understand what we're referring to?

Could you snap a Pic and point to them with a pencil?

I don't have a pic handy. From what he says, the clutch has been slipping and getting worse for a while now. Not to mention that someone stole his bike a couple of years ago and there's no telling how they rode it before it was recovered. We took the clutch fibers out and they look used (duh) but I haven't really worked on a clutch before, not on a bike anyhow so I don't really have any reference as to how much material should be on the fiber plates.

Also, we're looking for a replacement ignition switch and gas cap for it. Right now I have a bid on ebay for both but we'll see how that ends in a couple of days.

Under the circumstances I would recommend doing a Clutch "Kit" complete with new springs and hardware.

You know you have conquered the slip. You get the have a Bike with your own new Clutches in it.

You don't have to baby it and worry about the Clutch now performing at the highest level. It's all good!

You can do Friction Plate only ... Both Friction and Drivers ... or, the whole Kit, depending on how thing look and what you care to spend.

If it was my bike I would do the friction plates and springs but he's in a monetary pickle so I think he's just going for the friction plates. Now we need to find him another ignition and gas cap since we lost the ebay bid to a zilch feedback bidder.

You should Really, REALLY should replace the compression springs and their bolts/washers, too, while you're in there........they're not that expensive!:

Clutch Pressure Plate Compression Springs and Bolts:

As mentioned earlier, these springs wear after time and should ALWAYS be repalced as part of a clutch rebuild. And the factory recommends that the clutch bolts always be replaced and not be re-used. We have a selection of both OEM and aftermarket springs and bolts to allow you to properly restore your bike.
