Just about ready to get the Seca started. Went out today and rebuilt and bled the front brakes, although they still feel a little spongy. But I'll bleed them once more before I take it out on the road. Probably still has a little air in the system, since I tore them down completely, including rebuilding the master and slave cylinders. Also while I had it all torn apart I blew out all of the lines, pretty nasty looking stuff in there. 8O

Also started cleaning the fuel tank. Thought about the trick of putting a handful of nuts in it and shaking like crazy. But ended up using a box of 4000 bb's instead. Worked pretty good, although it is a little loud. Pretty easy to shake them all out of the fuel petcock and fuel gauge hole. Felt like one of those little games where you roll bb's around a board and try to get them in a hole. Except in this case I couldn't see the bb's. Ended up sticking a small magnet in the fuel gauge hole and rolling all of the bb's to it. Then I pulled out the magnet and the last 5 or 6 bb's. All of the bb's went in shiny and silver and came out covered in rust. Then I blew out all of the dust left in the tank. All I need to do now is rinse it out a few times.

I was also wondering if anyone has tried using CLR, (calcium, lime and rust remover), in their tank? I wondering if it would do any damage? I don't have any large rusty areas in it. Just want to get as much of it out as possible.

Haven't tried CLR... interesting idea. Have used POR-15. After banging 4000 bbs around inside, they give you a zinc-something mixture that is supposed to convert the rusted surface into something else that won't oxidize (sorry... not a chemist). Then there's a final coating step that puts something like a heavy paint into the tank that covers all the surfaces. Did it a couple of years ago to a heavily-rusted tank and haven't had problems since. Try this link:

    Good luck!

Check out the Rust Removal link in our Links section.

Once you are done, I would also recommend installing inline fuel filter. They are very inexpensive and could save you tons of trouble.

Another method whoch works well is to use standard swimming pool acid. I successfully de-rusted my wife's tank with a concentrated solution.

That would be straight Hydrocloric Acid '8O'

You'd want to make sure you flushed every drop of residue out as that would play havoc with petcock seals.

Yes, Don't Ask Me How I Know This.

I had to replace the entire petcock after draining some of the solution out through it. But it was nice and clean inside...what was left of it!

As with any of these methods, you're messing with serious checmicals, so you want to be careful and use sommon sense.

The petcock seals won't be a problem right now as I have it torn down waiting for new seals. The old ones were already shot when I bought the bike.

    Thanks for the tips.
