I am trying to remove spacers from the front forks. The top cap on the forks will not move. Do you have to do something first before you can losen the top caps? I have loosened the bolts on the triple tree, and go to losen the top cap with a 17mm hex head but I keep breaking my hex head it is on very tight. Any suggestions? Thanks vern

It's only supposed to be torqued to 17 ft.lb's.
Must be stuck from the years.

I would try an impact gun with a hex socket. that sudden shock should bust it loose.

Once you pull the cap the first thing out should be the spacer.
But i'd pull the spring out to make sure they didn't space it from the bottom of the spring too.

I'm not sure how long the original spacer is supposed to be.
If I remember right when I did mine it was 4 or 5 inches long, but I have a 650.
    Good luck

No did not work. Impact just broke the hex socket. The forks were suppose to have been rebuilt about a year ago. That is what the guy is telling me when I bought the bike from him. Not sure what I am going to do? :? Does anyone know the factory length of the the forks or the height of the front end on a 85 xj700 maxim?

Yes. Did not buy another one because of cost. Are they left handed thread? Maybe I am going the wrong way or is there some type of threaded allen screw in the side for safety reasons? Really dont know what to do. In looking at them they are not rusted look to be in pretty good shape.
