I recently purchased a 1980 Maxim that has been sitting under an oak tree for the past 3 years for $400. $1000 later, I'm riding it to and from work daily (weather permitting). There are several small issues yet.

Main annoyance is the speedo. The original wouldn't register above 25 MPH. Bought another on Ebay. It's better but not right (registers slower than I'm riding and needle shakes at highway speeds). this isn't great, but it's not the main issue.

Both the original AND the "new" speedo lack the threaded part on the back where the cable attaches. The PO had jury rigged it with tie-wire and I have been forced to do the same. I realize that this could very well be the cause of the accuracy problems. I have verified with my local dealer that I have the correct cable. This leads me to believe that the gauge itself is off a different model. I'm hoping that someone here can tell me what model (dealer was no help) so I can get the correct cable to fit the gauge.

BTW, I know that newbies posting redundant queries is frowned upon. I DID search through a TON of previous posts for this answer with no sucess.

Well - I can confirm that 80-83 650 Maxim's used the same cable-driven speedo, so you should be able to use any of those.
I don't have my parts cross-reference here with me, so I can't verify which of the others used the same part yet -- hopefully someone else will chime in, otherwise I'll do the lookup when I get home

Yes---the 1980-81 XJ650 speedo units are different from the '82-3 units via part number, but I do not know what the physical or mechanical differences are (if any). It may be just a lighting difference, or it may be something more..

Kountze is Just north of Beaumont TX (30-45 minutes depending on traffic) and about 165 miles from Caldwell. Just now I'm at work with a flat rear tire. took 2 cans of fix-a-flat to get here. Any suggestions?
